What criteria makes a doctor an LLMD? Are they certified for this? Basically the reason I ask is one to find out what qualifications make someone an LLMD and two when I call some places I am going to ask if the doctor is an LLMD and I don't want people to go what is that?

Thank you for your help.

You need to ask if the doctor treats chronic Lyme disease. That will suffice.

LLMD is a title mostly given to them. They are willing to treat Lyme past 4 wks and do believe in chronic Lyme!!

Some are family care physicians, some (few) ID doctors, some are internists... you never know what field.

Most are LLMD's because they themselves have Lyme or because a family member has/had it.

Other than that, there is no certification.

Also ask if they follow the ILADS guidelines. That means they believe in treating longterm.

Most of these drs do attend Lyme conferences to gain the info they need and remain on the cutting edge.

Hi Larry,

Yes! Ask if they follow the ILADS Guidelines (as opposed to the IDSA Guidelines--that's what nearly all of the infectious disease doctors follow and it is not at all adequate.)

You can read the ILADS Guidelines at www.ilads.org and on the left menu click "Treatment Guidelines."

You'll find both the ILADS Guidelines and beneath it Dr. Burrascano's 33 pages of tips for 2005.

Hang-in there.
