my sister's been doing it for about six weeks, has lost about 50 pounds and says she feels like a million bucks with tons on energy! she's now talking about trying to go completely organic. sounds like a winner to me! of course, her needs for weight loss are exactly the same as ours with Lyme, but it seems like a very healthy way of life!

Thanks for the replies, I am not going to re-read the book.

I bought it and quickly read through it a few months ago and at the tiem though it seems like way too much work. Also, as I recall it either contradicted some of the low-carb (which my LLMD says I must follow, yet he recommended the book) or the dairy bit, can't remember. i.e. I'm "supposed" to eat plain yogurt daily according to LLMD. It was one of those hwich put me off.

I will have to re-read it and refresh my memory now. Book is still sitting in my kitchen table collecting dust.

Glad to hear it's working for some.

Edited to add: I just had a look at the website posted above, and it says that no margarine or fats allowed except flax seed oil.

I thought that flax seed when on antibiotics, for some reason, was bad. Also with Mepron/Malarone I am supposed to eat a fatty meal with it. So, I guess this is really not compatible especially not with Babs treatment?

Hi and thanks for the replies.

It does look like an appealing alternative for me right now after years of on/off strict induction Atkins, which seems to not work for me anymore. That could be partly because I now have hormonal problems (Polycystic Ovaries - too much testosterone, etc, which makes me store fat like there's not tomorrow).

The Fat Flush book says that medications are a problem when it comes to weight loss. But, I guess if some of you are still losing while on abx, then that can't be such a problem.

To try to stave off yeast, I have been having about 8oz plain yogurt (plus probiotics) every day and I think this is also helping me to keep WEIGHT ON. But, I don't want a yeast problem either - feel caught in a catch 22 there.

What about Flaxseed. The diet seems to heavily promote the use of flaxseeds/oil.

Doesn't Dr. B's guidelines say Flaxoil is bad with antibiotics? (I can't recall why though).

Can one substitute the flaxseeds/oil on the diet for something else?

I might have asked something obvious here, so forgive me, because I'm only at the beginning of the book. Although I skimmed through it before a while ago, nothing stuck in my brain - so it's like brand new again.

Also, can't get sugarfree cranberry juice in UK and have never seen fresh berries, so will have to seriously investigate that one to make it work. I imagine cranberry juice, plain, doesn't have a lot of carbs or sugar.

I'm glad to hear it's working for some.

Lisa, do you have any grains at all and still lose weight?

Hi Lisa,

I found "No added sugar" cranberry juice, however it has aspartame. So, it's a compromise.

There is nowhere that sells fresh or frozen cranberries here. (its' not in season they tell me).

Dr. B said I should be on a very low-carb diet (I knew that already), but also that fruits are strictly forbitten UNLESS eating with a meal.......So, this leaves me with the following question:

Is the minute amount of carbs/sugar in unsweetened, diluted cranberry juice going to promote yeast?

Gittleman says 2 fruits a day, I see they are between meals. This, I guess is not good for anti-yeast as too sugary.

Have you been on antibiotics while doing this program and not had a yeast problem?

Compromise? Please just say "NO" to even a touch of aspartame. It is nothing to ever, EVER compromise. Aspartame is toxic to our nerve cells.

I also have some serious consideration with any diet that says it will "flush" fat, mostly with the name and the concept.

Yes, we are to avoid FLAX, according to Dr. B.

I would think that other oils could be used but if the author of that diet says "no" to that, it's another reason to run from this. We need different kinds of fats all through the day, every 3-5 hours.

The meals here look well balanced but there are no greens at all with dinner, just squash. We need at least 2 kinds of veggies with every meal and some in between, too. Leafy greens should be in abundance.

But the snacks need protein and fat with some complex carbohydrates, like from nuts or avocado with a fruit.

We should never think about "flushing" anything from our body (other than from the bladder and colon, of course).

Flushing the whole body of fat is a violent image and not the way the body works. The body works best by releasing, metabolizing, slimming . . . all in time.

Besides, we have to stop thinking in terms that fat is bad. Being overweight, especially with lyme, is a very complex situation.

Yes, obesity presents major problems. But it's just not so simple where lyme CAUSES the obesity. It cannot be managed like a teen age crash diet (which never really was - or is - good).

For those with lyme, adrenal support is the most important key to weight normalization (in addition to healthful food, and enough of it).

Still, often, it is not until after lyme is well into remission that the weigh normalizes.

It's important to remember that when we burn fat too fast, the liver can become WAY more toxic. WAY more.

And too fast of fat loss (or severe dieting) can nearly make an ailing gallbladder explode.

Be very careful with this. It can be very dangerous.

Remember, too, that excess weight is not just about fat. Inflammation expands our cells.
