Paula Sten of Houghton Michigan died this past weekend. She is survived by her exhusband and her 21 year old son. Paula came to the Duluth Superior LDSG in 1992 and was suffering from severe neurological Lyme disease that responded well to initial treatment with IV antibiotics.

After Paula's initial treatment and partial recovery from Lyme disease: Paula relapsed and was plagued for the next 12 years by physical and mental demons of her illness.

Despite off and on again antibiotic treatments, Paula was in constant pain and her mind was in a state of confused chaos and paranoia.

Paula took her own life and died of a self inflicted gunshot.

Paula's torment was clear to everyone who knew her, but the decline of her body and mind proved too much for her friends, medicine and herself to over come. She was a fighter and and scrapper and tried to do what she could in her hours to help herself and others with Lyme including organizing a support group and a small medical conference for the Upper Michigan Health department on Lyme Disease.

There will be a memorial service this weekend, those that knew her are encouraged to send a brief remembrance to the family. I hope to have and post that information as soon as it is available to me. If others know please post the information. Thank You

Tom Grier

How sad.

Lyme can do such terrible things to the brain, which is essential to be able to fight the disease.

For all this woman to have gone through, and still help other lymies, and bring awareness to this disease is truly remarkable.

Another one of the "silent" heroes in the throes of this disease, putting other ill people before themselves.

She's home now, in the hands of our Redeemer. The years of pain are gone.
Godspeed
Mike

Tom...thank you.

Paula is finally at peace. I too have severe Lyme Brain issues, and I know how she felt. To her family: Your suffering is in my prayers.

Love, peace and wellness,
JRW

Tom, a large group from Michigan came to the Lyme convention in 2001, I believe. Do you know if she was part of that group? We may have her on tape as some of the lymies were taped.

So sad. Prayers for all her family.

Peace for Paula and for all who feel sorrow and pain.

It hurts so much to not be able to do more to relieve people's suffering.

I don't know what else to do.

How can we get these folks the help they need?

How many more will lose the battle before we find the answers?

Thank you Tom for sharing Paula's story with us.

Thank you Ann for posting the site.

Thank you for passing on this info. about Paula. My heartaches for her loved ones and the pain she endured for so long. She is at peace and paid a heavy price to reach a place of rest.

God bless her.
