I think LLMD in your subject line might be incorrect, in that it refers to doctors who are treating lyme patients. I don't think he was. But it sounds like he was an activist in several areas and this is a great loss.

Hope that they catch the murderer and it turns out not to have anything to do with his activism. The alternative is just too frightening to think about.

May Dr. Lull's tragic death lead to an outpouring of people with medical and science backgrounds who refuse to remain silent about what is going on any longer.
Grants and clearances be hanged!

This doctor's tremendous courage has too few parallels in our time.

Condolences to Dr. Lull's family, friends, and associates. He will never be forgotten.

Since the term LLMD is not official...it could apply to a Dr. who is just informed (or doing research) but not actually treating patients.

There is a journalist's email at the end of this article on dr Lull's death.

Should we email the reporter with some information about Dr Lull's outspokenness on the corruption in Lyme medicine, and about the persecution of our doctors in general?

He was a former Army expert on nuclear medicine who was active in community groups over nuclear issues, and called for mass testing for BSE in American cattle. He could have angered a lot of very powerful lobbies in those activities.

However, we can't rule out that his death was related to his involvement in the Lyme world either.

Maybe if we let some of these investigative reporters know about the background of persecution of Lyme doctors, they may go away and do some useful digging?

I would respectfully disagree with his ex-wife's view that being an amiable character, he would not have made enemies.

Being BOTH popular and prepared to stand up on militarily sensitive issues will make you **a hell of a lot of enemies**.

I salute the man and send my deep condolences to those who were closest to him.

Not much to go on in slaying of doctor
2 credit cards found but car still missing -- 'a real whodunit'

Police have recovered two credit cards that investigators believe were stolen when a prominent San Francisco doctor was stabbed to death in his Diamond Heights home, but they are still searching for the slain man's car, authorities said Friday.

Dr. Robert Lull, 64, was found Thursday near the front hall of his home on Gold Mine Drive, stabbed several times in an attack that investigators believe happened Wednesday night.

Lull's gray, tan or beige four-door 1995 Geo Prizm is missing, investigators said Friday, along with the keys. Police issued a statewide bulletin Friday for the car, license plate 3KOA282.

Lull's wallet was found in the house, but there was no cash in it. In addition, two of Lull's credit cards were found at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday by a 35-year-old man walking to Kate O'Brien's bar on Howard Street, police said.

He found the cards in the 500 block of Howard, just east of the bar. It is unclear whether the cards had been used since Lull was killed.

On his own, the man called the credit card companies Thursday morning to cancel them. "They said he could either turn them in, or he could cut them up, '' said homicide Inspector Holly Pera.

"He was going to cut them up, but by the time he got around to doing it, he saw the news account on the 19th and recognized the name as being on the cards,'' Pera said.

Despite the missing car and apparent credit card theft, Pera said investigators aren't convinced that robbery was the sole motive for Lull's killing. She said a robber would typically have taken more valuables from Lull's home than what the killer left with.

"This is a real whodunit,'' Pera said. "Usually, one of the first steps we take is look for the dark side of the victim. But we have been unable to find one so far. It seems he was well-liked and respected throughout his circle and family.''

Lull had been chief of nuclear medicine at San Francisco General Hospital since 1990 and served as a radiology professor at UCSF.

He was past president of the American College of Nuclear Physicians and the San Francisco Medical Society and served as editor of the medical society's journal, San Francisco Medicine, from 1997 to 1999.

Police said that Lull's home was largely undisturbed and that the doctor had been attacked near where he was found. "If there was a struggle, it happened right there,'' Pera said.

Investigators still aren't sure what to make of one odd clue left at the scene -- more than a dozen cherry pits scattered on the walkway leading to the home as well as some inside, on the living room rug.

Pera said investigators had found an open bag of cherries in the refrigerator but don't know whether Lull or someone else ate them.

It was first thought the pits could have fallen out when the doctor took out the trash, but the garbage can was never taken to the curb.

Lull's former wife, Lee Lull, said Friday that she didn't think her husband would be so untidy as to leave cherry pits all over the place.

Pera said authorities planned to run DNA tests on the cherries in hopes that could lead to a suspect. But the fruit's acidity could damage any DNA, she said.

Lee Lull said robbery was the only likely scenario, given her ex- husband's character.

"Knowing Bob, he doesn't incur too much ire in people -- he was a reasonable person," she said.

She said Lull loved music and sometimes played trombone in a group called the Las Galinas Valley Sanitary District Non-Marching Band.

"It's a funny name," she said. "They would go to all the parades and then not march.

"I just can't express enough that this is a loss," she said. "His death is a loss to anybody who knew him.''

Funeral services are pending.

I don't think we should be suggesting this was lyme related, unless Lee tells us it would be appropriate to pursue this point of view.

It may turn out to be some drug addict off his head who didn't even know who the victim was.

Editing this to note that cave and I were typing at the same time, and I did not know the perpetrator had been caught. Maybe the moral of this story is that people with mental problems are being poorly handled in our society. They got rid of asylums and just dumped those people out on the street. And the war on drugs has certainly been a bust.

Cave, I've seen news reports on the net dated today, talking about a guy called Millare, who was apparently the son of Dr Lull's assistant and had a history of violence. However, those articles are saying he hasn't been charged, only that he is a "person of interest" in the case. He is in custody because he has violated his parole.

Maybe we should keep an open mind about the murder till we know more? After all, the guy hasn't been charged yet, much less had his trial. And the fact that he has a history of violence doesn't necessarily prove that he is the person who killed Dr Lull.

But, on the other hand, maybe you've heard more recent information?

This is from the San Francisco Chronicle:

SAN FRANCISCO
Figure in fatal stabbing a criminal, mentally ill
Son of slain doctor's aide long troubled
- Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 25, 2005

The Pittsburg man police label a "person of interest" in the stabbing death of a prominent San Francisco doctor has a long history of mental problems and criminal activity, authorities said Tuesday.

Ellison Millare, 30, the son of Dr. Robert Lull's longtime personal assistant, Elsie de Rosas Garces, is being held on a parole violation but has not been charged with Lull's murder. Lull was stabbed to death last Wednesday in his hilltop home in the Diamond Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.

Garces found the body Thursday afternoon.

Police initially focused on Millare after the doctor's girlfriend revealed that Lull, 64, had given Millare a ride home to his motel in Pittsburg earlier in the week, according to police and the family of the victim.

She counseled the doctor against it, saying it was late, but the doctor ended up giving Millare a ride. It is not known where the doctor picked up Millare on Monday or last week.

Lull's Geo Prizm was found parked behind a state parole office in Concord. Police said Tuesday they are still conducting a detailed search of the car. Millare has a long criminal history and has mental problems, authorities said. As a juvenile, he shot at an airplane, authorities said.

As an adult, Millare has had run-ins with the law since 1994, when he was convicted and sent to prison for second-degree robbery with the use of a gun.

He was freed two years later, but within six months, he violated his parole in April 1997.

He was a fugitive for five years until he was caught in June 2002 at San Francisco General Hospital, said acting regional parole administrator Christine Moore.

Imprisoned until January 2003, he was soon in trouble again. That March, he was arrested for robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and grand theft, Moore said.

He allegedly stole a woman's purse and punched her in the face, Moore said. Moore said the case was in San Francisco, but prosecutors have no record of the incident.

He served 10 months and was freed on parole in January 2004. On March 13 of last year, he allegedly struck a store clerk at a Market Street Walgreens and fled. No one witnessed the attack and there was no video of it, although a hammer was found and he was seen running from the store, authorities said.

"No one could identify him as being the assailant,'' said Chief Assistant District Attorney Russ Guintini.

He was found to have violated his parole in the incident. This March, he was released on parole again to the Pittsburg area, Moore said.

"He was complying with his conditions of parole,'' Moore said, until May 18, Moore said, when Millare failed to show up for a clinical appointment at his parole office.

He showed up the next day and was taken into custodywhen it appeared he had gone off his medication.

"They were concerned about his mental health at that point,'' Moore said. "As a condition of his parole, he was to participate in an outpatient clinic.''

One of the victim's sons, Jonathan Lull, said he learned that his father had given Millare a ride home.

"The kid had gotten out (of prison). My dad was just giving him a ride back over there,'' the younger Lull said. "My dad was probably trying to help. My dad felt he could do something for Elsie's kid. He was really big on trying to pull families together.''

The doctor's girlfriend was against it, Lull said. "My understanding is she had cautioned him not to have anything to do with the kid,'' Jonathan Lull said.

A memorial service for Lull is set for 2 p.m. June 12 at the San Francisco Medical Society's office on Sutter Street. "It's not going to be a funeral, it's going to be a celebration of life." Jonathan Lull said.

I just saw this now. I'm shocked and heartbroken.

My sincere condolences to Lee and the family.

I agree that this should not be made into a political issue. If it turns out that there's a reason to do so, I'm sure that Lee would let us know.

I was in shock the other night when the news reported the stabbing of Dr. Robert Lull.

I did not post it on Lymenet so Lee and their family could have as much privacy as possible.

Dr. Lull was a very caring man, I was at the meeting that Cave has posted above. He listened to each one of us as if there were only one of us, as we each told our Lyme story.

He was well respected and loved by many. San Francisco, or I should say we all have lost a great Doctor and friend.
