I'm not one to panic....but this storm is REALLY worrying me! I'm a native Houstonian, and have plenty of family living there and nearby. Just about all of our family lives within 50 miles of the coast. Not good. [shake]

I have close friends in Victoria, where the storm appears to be headed right now. We lived there 11 yrs.

My inlaws live 40 miles from the coastline, near Corpus Christi. So it doesn't matter WHERE it hits, it's going to affect someone I know and love.

On that note....it doesn't matter WHERE it hits, [even if it's not Texas] because it is going to destroy someone's life and property....somewhere.

Prayers are in order for our fellow Americans!

My thoughts and prayers go out for all along the path of this storm.

Good to see all of the evacuations and preparations.

It is a big storm, the eye is huge,it will be a cat 5 when it finally comes ashore.Hope not.

I hope your family will remain safe Too. [group hug]

We have just gotten over Ophelia along our coast, smaller but still did alot of damage, especially to the farmers.

Safe blessings going down to the Gulf.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

if you and/or family members have to flee, and your low on meds. and can't realistically forsee getting a refill on meds., call the Red Cross, and ask if there is any way you could get a prescription refill, or extra Px,due to the unknown.

Hey TuTu - if they venture this far north they can look me up!!

We're gittin' ready to "hunker" down and hope it doesn't send too many tornados our way!

Huntsville is the first city in the shelter hub for I-45 (Galveston, Houston).

I think as of tonight - all lanes are going North only w/ no exits before Huntsville (or, maybe that is for tomorrow)???

All our store shelves are empty - no water, very little canned food etc. We sheltered many from Katrina and that pretty much depleted many things around here!

I'm crossing fingers the power doesn't stay out for long and that nothing major befalls us! It seems we all are trying to be prepared having seen the horror of Katrina.

Take care and be sure and email me & I'll give you numbers etc - you may still have 'em - I dont' remember!!

We are still fostering a Katrina dog and may be receiving some horses to house during this evacuation.

I think my neighbor is receiving 12 tomorrow.

I can't imagine having to get all that together to leave.

Sherry

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you in the path of Rita.

When you have time, please let us know that you and all members of your families are OK.

Will continue to pray that the storm will be weakened before it makes landfall.

This storm is a monster. Hopefully it will hit the cooler water and weaken.

Anything I can do for my Texas cousins just let me know.

My prayers are with everyone in Rita's path.

God bless,
Linda

Well, I feel a tad better because my brother and his wife are leaving Houston. I was so afraid he wouldn't leave.

They were concerned about the MANY 60 ft pine trees in their yard and in neighbor's yards. I estimate they are 60-70 miles north of the coastline.

They will try to make it to Austin, but the traffic is a nightmare and people are running out of gas on the freeways. Hopefully, they will open that highway to all lanes going north very soon.

Still don't know if my brother-in-law will be leaving Houston. We hope so.

I haven't contacted my relatives who live west of Houston. I suspect many of them will be staying put.

Everyone's well-wishes are much appreciated. It seems like we Houstonians just got done helping Katrina victims and now, who knows what's going to happen to our town.

We're about 70 miles inland and are staying
because we want to keep tabs on the creek below us. We lost our last home as a result of flooding from Tropical Storm Allison in 2001. Oh, yeah, that's also when I caught lyme, while I was out in the yard for days on end inventorying and photographing ruined items for insurance.

It's very hot and still and sunny....hard to believe that 4 miles from my house traffic is parked on one of the freeways out of town and a vicious storm is barreling toward us in the Gulf.
It had to be awful in the old days before TV and radio, because storms like this would catch people unawares.

I went to the grocery store about 8:30 Tuesday night and there was not one bottle of water on the shelf...but I figured I knew where to find some...the health food section! There the refrigerator shelves were still stocked with bottled spring water and Smart Water, so I filled my cart to the top with chilled water. [Cool] I need the bottled water more for my critters than for us. We'll use tub water and pool water if need be.

It took about 3x longer than usual to get home from work last night due to the evacuation. My co. was smart enough to give us today and tomorrow off, but turned off all the servers so I have no e-mail.

This evening when it cools off a bit, we'll bring in the patio furniture, potted plants, wind chimes, and the lovely door wreath that one of our list members made for me.

My lymed-but-in-denial hubby is trying to get up the gumption to cut down a limb on a neighbor's tree that threatens our house. I'm more worried about flooding and tornadoes than falling limbs.

Just heard on the news that Rita was downgraded to a cat 4, so maybe she'll be even milder when she makes landfall. Here's hoping!

Sue, my brother got water in his house during TS Allison too! That was the first time the home had ever flooded in at least 30 yrs.

They could NOT get out due to traffic and for now, they're staying. I think they are actually about 75 miles inland.

We're all worried about the pine trees crashing through the roof. [shake] I probably won't hear from them for a long time after the storm. That's my worry! It's already been hard to get through on the phone.

I'm hoping the storm is going east of Houston, but I don't wish it on anybody!

My thoughts & prayers go out to all in the hurricane's pathway. Praying it will be downgraded & not be a 5 like Katrina.

Glad to see the interstate opened up both ways for 16 lanes of traffic headed NORTH. Traffic jams horrible....running out of gas & water.

I have cousins and an aunt in the Corpus Christie area. Don't know if they evacuated or not. Will pray for all of those in that area. Hiker

It's pretty windy now and the weather people tell us to expect tropical storm winds(60 mph+) later tonight, but it looks like the worst of it will bypass the Houston/Galveston area towards the east.

Looks like Victoria/Corpus will escape it entirely. I wouldn't want to be in Port Arthur right now.

My old generator works well enough to run the freezer and the blender so I guess 'Rita will be reality even if the power goes out.

We may get 6-8" of rain though which means a yard full of water and water moccasins on the front porch which creates terribly inauspicious feng shui.

Hope everybody else in the group sails thru this mess....I really feel bad for the bunch that tried to evacuate and got stuck on the freeways for so many hours.

Charlie

Hey charlie! Gotta love those water moccassins!! [Big Grin] I stepped right over one on my patio one morning while living in Victoria.

I honestly had to step over him again so I could get back in the house! He was all stretched out getting the cool air coming from under the french doors!

[aw heck, what's a little 5 ft moc??!! [Eek!] ]

I have several relatives riding out the storm ... found out my brother-in-law was unable to get out either. I think all will be OK, but I'm sure the storm will get pretty scary! [dizzy]

Yes, we'd better pray for those still in the path of the storm. I also would not want to be in Port Arthur right now.

We dodged a bullet in Houston. It's just breezy, overcast, and raining lightly. I really miss tree-waving breezes from my Yankee days, so I've been sitting outside enjoying it.

I feel badly for the folks who were impacted directly. My LLMD is in Lufkin, but her office is in a bunker!

The worst part may be yet to come - everyone who left all trying to get back into town in time to start work Monday.

There was a lot of talk on the media about too many people leaving causing the traffic crisis. The thing is, unless you live right along the coast where it's obvious that you need to leave, you really can't know if you should evacuate until it's too late, so people who were frightened probably did the right thing by leaving.
