Just a note:

I met with my Representative Tom Petri (6th dist. WI) at the end of April, during a 15-minute face to face meeting at one of his citizen's days.

I provided him with the LDA's packet of info on the ALERT Act, sample stories from my www.LymeLeague.com web site where lyme patients tell their stories,

told him about my family's struggles...

AND HE SIGNED ON TO COSPONSOR. Right now, I think he is the only Rep. from WI to do so...hopefully the other groups are working on the others to do the same thing.

Thanks Rep. Petri!

Dear Mr. Renzi~

I recently read in the Flagstaff newspaper about T-Gen. That sounds wonderful to have a research facility in Flagstaff that would allow development of diagnostics methods so physcians can identify diseases.

I am going to ask you to consider co-sponsoring HR3427, the Lyme and Tick Borne Disease Prevention, Education and Research Act of 2005.

This, perhaps, could also be part of what T-Gen will do...work with the Lyme disease pathogen, Borrelia Burgdorferi.

I have lyme disease. I believe I contracted it in Northern Arizona. It took me over a year and a half to get a diagnosis, and I finally got one....at Columbia University Medical Center in NY. No doctor in Arizona had any idea what was going on with me.

My medical expenses last year were over $65,000. There is no definitive lab test for lyme disease, and the treatment is also elusive for chronic cases (which mine became because no one could diagnose me).

Please consider co-sponsoring that bill.

Sincerely,

Tina Caskey
Flagstaff, AZ

Tina, great letter...to the point and using $65,000 expenses to give him an idea about lyme costs! Well done! Thanks for posting.

Yo, John Kerry...Hello...we need you on board!!

October 21, 2003

Dear *****

Thank you for contacting me regarding Lyme disease legislation. I
appreciate hearing from you on this important matter.

In the United States, Lyme disease is the second fastest growing
infectious disease after the HIV virus. In fact, the number of cases of
Lyme disease reported annually in the United States has increased 25-fold
since national surveillance began in 1982. Between 1993 and 1997, an
average of 12,500 cases were reported annually by states to the Centers
for Disease Control. Each year, thousands of Americans are bitten by
ticks. While most individuals may never experience symptoms, many will
suffer damage to the nervous system, skin, and joints. Unfortunately,
with Lyme disease, significant health complications are often undetected
or untreated.

Legislation introduced by Senator Rick Santorum (S. 1905) would establish
a five-year, $125 million agenda for attacking Lyme disease by bolstering
funding for prevention, early detection, and public and physician
education. Additionally, the legislation would require the primary
federal agencies involved in Lyme disease research and education to
substantially improve the coordination of their work in an effort to
minimize duplication and enhance federal leadership. Senator Santorum's
legislation would bring needed attention to a growing public health
concern. I support this legislation and I hope that the Senate will move
quickly to enact it.

Thank you again for contacting me regarding this issue. Please feel free
to do so in the future regarding this or any other matter of importance to
you.

Sincerely,

John F. Kerry
United States Senator

This thread is about to become active again. We expect the new bill numbers to be published soon and we will be asking you to make sure the legislators who signed on before, sign on again, and to contact new legislators. We will supply a letter, or the last letter should suffice since the bills will be identical to the previous ones.

Some people have received letters from legislators saying, "Thank you for your letter, we will consider your bill favorably when it comes up for a vote," are NOT acceptable. We want our legislators to SIGN ON AS COSPONSORS. This requires them actually to DO something BEFORE it comes up for a vote.

More later.
