I have a chance to talk to him thru a contact. He is a well know researcher. Does anyone know anything about him and what to expect. Thanks!

Rachel, there are 2 camps:

Dr. B, CHRONIC lyme antibiotic treatments, etc.
and
Dr. Steere, who believes ALL lyme can be cured with a short amount of abx in 4 weeks.

Read about it in TREEPATROL'S NEWBIE LINKS, medical section, screen 1 ... ALL newbies need to read this info to get the correct treatment for THEIR situation.

Are you going to be seeing him as a patient? I was not aware that he saw patients, thought he only did research.

He used to work at Johns Hopkins and wrote a book on lyme, which might be in your library. Maybe you might want to take a look at it, especially the case histories at the end in which hardly anybody actually is found to have lyme.

My opinion of him is that he has found the gold in lyme, cares only for patents, not for patients. Furthermore, his institution got a big bioterrorism grant, based on his "expertise" with lyme and other infectious diseases.

I would be very wary of him, and would definitely not give out the name of any physicians who have been treating you for lyme.

I am not going to see him as a patient - I am going to talk to him on the phone (hopefully) or email. He already knows the basics about me because my contact has already emailed him.

I will be careful not to say anything to hurt my LLMd who I am very grateful to.

Thanks again for the heads up.

here's some questions you can ask barbour, who is one of the worst of the prevaricators when it comes to lyme disease: ask him (a) what his thoughts are on the origins of lyme disease in the United States (b) whether he ever considered that "chronic brucellosis" went away as an issue because brucellosis was practically eliminated as a human and cattle disease in the united states {in his book he compares lymies to chronic brucellosis sufferers from the past, implying that both are munchausers) (c) ask him whether he thinks it is appropriate for a rheumatologist to write holistic reviews of lyme disease including all of its manifestations for major medical textbooks and ask him if he thought it would be appropriate for a gynecologist to write articles on neurosyphilis (d) ask him what he knows about the neuropsychiatric manifestations of late neuroborreliosis (e) ask him if he thinks its appropriate for the US government to spend billions$ on hypothetical or imaginary threats {ie, anthrax and tularemia} when in fact one person in the united states in the past ten years has died of inhalational anthrax {excepting the 2001 anthrax attack which originated within the US ID establishment} whereas tens of thousands are infected every year by a bizarre, very poorly understood bacterium {Bb} which has the most unique DNA structure of any bacterium known and possesses a very high number of open reading frames which encode proteins with no known homologues in nature (f) ask him to explain the discrepancies found between the Bb ss genome project and the german B. garinii project including 200,000+ missing base pairs and differences in protein expression and coding, ask him about the multidrug transporter found in B31..etc.

oh yeah...make sure to ask him whether he believes that lyme disease is the same thing as infection with B.b.

These are just a few questions. You might also ask him if he is aware of the president of the united states being briefed, at any time, by CDC and/or NIH officials or anyone else about lyme borreliosis and strategies to control it as a public health threat in the united states.

Make sure, if it is legal in your state, to record this conversation. In the past on multiple occasions barbour has said one thing and done another. he may seem sincere but he's tricky.
