Several months ago, the NP ordered a complete IGG food allergy blood panel. Recently, I got the bill for it (over $800), and learned that the tests are considered experimental. The NP never told me the tests are experimental, and neither did the person at Quest. If I would have known, I wouldn't have agreed to the test. I already had to pay almost $14k for IV antibiotics and I am trying to keep expenses to a minimum. I called the doctor's office and they filed an appeal on my behalf, which was denied. Do I have any other recourse? I feel like I have been wronged.

Did your doctors office give you the impression that the tests would be covered by your insurance?
I saw an alternative doctor a few years back who did a battery of such "experiental tests" He was clear with me over which tests my insurance, Blue Cross at that time, would cover and wich they would not. So there were no suprises. And there shouldn't be such suprises.
Talk to the NP and ask here were the misunderstanding came from. Were they aware that insurance, and yours in particular did not cover this test? What has been there experience with insurance covering this test?

The NP who ordered the test never indicated that they may be considered experimental. There have been other tests ordered where I was warned in advance. When I received the $800 bill, I called the Office Manager who kindly arranged for someone to write an insurance appeal for me, which was denied. Then I called the lab and there was nothing they could do either. I guess I am stuck with the bill and definitely not happy about it.
