I just got some blood work back and I found out my ebv count was 9. Normal is less than 1. Is this one of the reasons I feel so terible and do I really have mono? Can you have a reading this high without mono? I go to LLMD Wed. Thanks

Hi,

It sounds like you don't have a Lyme diagnosis yet, so it's a bit premature to know what is causing what.

I will say that I and many other Lyme patients end up having viruses that have been living in our bodies suddenly activate with Lyme. It's because Lyme and the other tick-borne diseases have suppressed our immune systems, so viruses start acting up.

EBV is one of the common ones that activates. Your Lyme doctor may want to do a comprehensive panel such as the Comprehensive Chronic Fatigue Syndrome panel from MDL labs that checks for a lot of viruses, mycoplasma, etc. My EBV titers are high again now that I have Lyme - they were high many years ago when I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome but not Lyme.

Lots of these things become active with Lyme. Some Lyme doctors will prescribe medications such as Valtrex or herbal supplements to try to treat the viruses so that the body isn't overwhelmed trying to fight the Lyme and the viruses.

EBV itself can make you feel lousy. As you know, it's involved with Mono, is one of the viruses that often activates during Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, etc., so it may be a culprit for you.

Let us know what your LLMD says.

Jill
