Meijer to Supply Free Antibiotics

AP

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (Oct. 23) - Meijer Inc.'s 176 pharmacies will
fill without charge prescriptions for seven generic oral antibiotics,
the discount retail and grocery chain said Monday.

"Any customer, regardless of insurance or copay, can take their
prescription to any Meijer pharmacy and receive their designated
antibiotic free of charge," the company said in a news release.

Meijer said its program covers at least one antibiotic from each
major antibiotic classification. They make up at least 70 percent of
the generic antibiotic prescriptions for children that Meijer fills.

The covered antibiotics are Amoxicillin, Cephalexin, SMZ-TMP,
Ciprofloxacin, Penicillin VK, Ampicillin and Erythromycin.

Grand Rapids-based Meijer has stores in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois and Kentucky.

Earlier this month, Wal-Mart Stores Inc . announced it would offer $4
prescriptions for some generic drugs at its stores in 15 states,
including Illinois and Indiana, after launching the program in the
Tampa, Fla., area two months ago.

In May, Kmart, which is part of Sears Holding Corp., started offering
184 generic prescriptions for $15 for a 90-day supply in all its
1,100 pharmacies nationwide.

I put it here because medical posts vanish off page one so fast. OK with me if someone wants to put it elsewhere. As I mentioned, I swiped this myself. Got to help good news travel as fast as the bad news!

Way cool, Lou!

The Walmart program went state wide much faster than the proposed date.

I haven't tried it, yet, but have a script for Doxy sitting here and that would be a covered drug. I'll report back and tell you how it goes.

Rumor has it Target stores will match Walmart's offer.

It's good to get a little good news now and again. [Smile]

If you scroll down to related links on this page:

you can see the list of covered meds, it's a PDF file.

I live in South Dakota and Walmart just started offering the $4.00 generic prescription here today. It is some what comforting to know that if my insurance company wont pay for my antibiotics, that at least I have some that will be available at Walmart. I talked to Walmart today and they said they will more then likely be adding new medications to their list.

I thought it was a little good news finally!!
