<Subject: [Lyme-Aid] say thanks to Oprah Magazine for running the ad on LYME DISEASE!
Reply-To: [email protected]

Here is the link to thank OPRAH MAGAZINE for running the ad about Lyme disease from www.turnthecorner.org in her O magazine.

http://www2.oprah.com/omagazine/omag_wehear.jhtml

Please try to keep your letter short and sweet and give a brief statement of how lyme has devestated your life or touched that of a family member or friend.

It says if an editor finds your letter of interest they may contact you....so if they get THOUSANDS of letters, I'm sure it will spark some interest!

So let's flood Oprah Magazine this week with a big THANK YOU for running the ad on Lyme disease! (and how Lyme Disease has touched your life or that of your family/friends.)

Thanks,
Dawn>>

Has anyone seen the ad? Hope it was a good one.

If anyone has seen it, can you describe it?

I e-mailed Turn The Corner (which has a great website, BTW) to see if they could supply the text.

I hope people will contact "O" at the address above and thank them for the ad.

Sorry,Cave, but I disagree. This is the first ad published that I know of. I am sure they get thanks from all sorts of people who read ads in their magazine.
If you go to the website I listed above:
http://www2.oprah.com/omagazine/omag_wehear.jhtml
takes you to this:

[quote]
What's Your Opinion? O Magazine wants to know what you think about O, The Oprah Magazine. We look forward to hearing from you!> [end quote]

A lot of people saying they are thankful that O Magazine is bringing awareness about Lyme and other Tick Borne disease to their readers is a good idea.

I am just wondering where all the people who keep trying to get Oprah to have one of her shows devoted to Lyme are.

I thought they would jump on this one and I do hope they are responding.

Ann,

I wasn't sure from your note if the O magazine ran the ad as a service to a charity or did Turn the Corner take out a paid ad? I'm thinking from what you said that it was for free and if that is the case, we really should be saying a thank you in huge numbers.

Unfortunately, I think all of the people who write about contacting Oprah are probably over in the medical section. When I first posted about the petition I did it in general and activism and there wasn't too much of a response until Cave so kindly posted it in medical. I know that it is a problem with this site that so many only go to the medical section.

I too would like to see the ad. I wonder if the ad was run for free. Thanking a magazine for running a paid ad seems odd. Perhaps we should be thanking Turn the Corner for paying for an ad.
If Turn the Corner paid for the ad we should thank them & encourage them to run ads in additional publications.

I checked out their website which is generally excellent. The photos of ticks were enlarged though and might make people think they are looking for a big obvious thing. There was nothing showing actual size. I'll send my comments to Turn the Corner.

I think I'll send a message to Oprah saying I'm a Lyme sufferer and was pleased to see Turn the Corner info in the magazine and hope they will consider publishing additional info and hopefully a full article about Lyme.

OK I sent emails to Turn The Corner & Oprah.
Here's what I sent Oprah:

I was pleased to see info about Lyme disease (Turn the Corner) in your publication.

I got Lyme Disease in July 2004. I am now in my 27th month of treatment and am continuing to get better. It is a long, slow, painful, process. My life has been drastically altered. Fortunately I had enough money in savings to pay for my treatment. Otherwise I would be disabled or dead now.

More and more people I know are getting Lyme too. It is reaching epidemic levels yet little is being done to educate the public, do research or provide adequate treatment.

I am an AMC hike leader and find that very few people take adequate precautions to prevent tick bites. Most people, think Lyme is relatively mild and easily treated. I thought that too until I got it. My Doctor was shocked at how sick I got. She had no idea what to do. Finally I found one of the few Doctors experienced in treating Lyme.

An article about Lyme Disease in your publication would be enormously valuable. I hope you will consider doing one soon.

Bravo, Hats!

Have you seen the ad in the magazine, Hats? Has anyone? If you did can you describe it?

I am going to try to find the magazine today.
Thanks,
Ann

No I haven't seen it. That's why I was vague in describing it in the letter. I suppose I could buy the magazine and then search for it. Kinda busy this week though.

For those of you who have not yet seen the ad, it is on page 221 of the November issue (that was my first and last issue of O I'll spend money on - really, is it sooo bad to talk about someone other than yourself once in awhile?)

Anyways, it's a third of the page and reads:

"YOU MAY HAVE IT AND NOT KNOW IT
It is projected that people are infected with Lyme Disease at a rate of five times greater than that of AIDS.
A cure is in sight, but we need your help. To support research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases, visit our website at www.turnthecorner.org"

I agree with Lynne:

I've seen other subjects place in medical, just to draw attention.
I for one will send a message to oprah before I go to bed tonight.
If she gets on board with this it can only help bring attention to people suffering from TBD'S.

Hey-I was sitting in the waiting area at the pharmacist's-waiting for my prescription for Nystatin to be filled since I have developed thrush. [Frown]

I saw a copy of Oprah's mag on the coffee table and found the ad on page 221, just where someone here said it would be!

There's also an empty white sillouhette in the ad of a person's body . And I thought , that's right- Lyme is the great eraser-it has erased most everything in my life-except bills!!!!!

the other night, there was a show about yellow fever on pbs. from the seventeenth century on through the twentieth, this disease killed millions. in the final days of ignorance about the cause, doctors struggled to enlighten health officials that mosquitos where responsible. the man who proposed this theory waited twenty years until another team of doctors proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the mosquito theory.

we don't have another twenty years. whether oprah is useful or not in helping us, is secondary to those in the medical establishment, who are unwilling to acknowledge this epidemic. they are beyond contempt.

I am glad a lot of people responded here. Not sure how many responded to the magazine. It is very easy. Just go to http://www2.oprah.com/omagazine/omag_wehear.jhtml

and say "thank you" for running the ad from Turn the Corner Foundation.

Here is what the ad said: (as quoted by AP)

page 221 of the November issue

"YOU MAY HAVE IT AND NOT KNOW IT
It is projected that people are infected with Lyme Disease at a rate of five times greater than that of AIDS.
A cure is in sight, but we need your help. To support research, education, awareness and innovative treatments for Lyme Disease and other tick-borne diseases, visit our website at www.turnthecorner.org"

Now, please click on
http://www2.oprah.com/omagazine/omag_wehear.jhtml
and speak up. Please?

Ann, I just sent my thank you and mentioned briefly about my having lyme 36 yrs., 34 misDX, and 2 yrs. in lyme treatment.

Did notice on the site asking for personal stories AND story suggestions .

Perhaps if 50-100 of us sent her link our stories on the SAME DAY, we might have a chance of tv show on chronic lyme? What do you think?

I am not as readily able to be on the internet these days and today ran across this and took the que to write to Oprah, again. [Big Grin]

These were my words:

"I was informed that your O magazine ran an ad for Lyme Disease and so want to thank you and Gail ... it seems quite desperate to be thankful for an ad! But this shows the state of desperation that many people such as myself are in right now in the midst of a medical controversy in treating and diagnosing something that I have witnessed in myself and am a testament to say...is very real. But there is a force of drs. out there who deny this and it is hurting numerous people. The divide between the drs philosophies is making it unbearable for many who suffer from late stage neurological lyme. I was once quite a voracious reader and writer and this disease went on undiagnosed in me for so many years...I had a very slow deterioration that is embarrassing and maddening. The only drs who would help are the same ones being persecuted. It is a mess. It would be supreme if you might also have a show to help reveal the truth on this devastation right here in our country. Thanks again Oprah, for all you do.
Sincerely."

I hope it helps. I fear many more will die before anything real is done but hopefully this is not a valid fear. The whole thing about yellow fever is very telling. I'd have thunk we'd have evolved a great deal since then!

I do understand the hesitancy in abx resistance and superbugs but it is long overdue that camp a and camp b form camp c like....NOW.

I just emailed Oprah from the link you all provided. I said the following to her:

"Dear Oprah. YOu recently said on Larry King Live that your life's fear is that you will die without fulfilling your life's great purpose. Could your purpose be to expose the crimes of the Infectious Disease Society of America and stop the suffering of the lyme community? Please help us. We are dying and have no voice.

Mary"

I don't know if that was appropriate, but it is what is in my heart.

You know who would be GREAT at putting on a show about Lyme>.....MONTEL.
He is very into promoting awareness of health issues and things that our country needs to focus on...like disease, etc.
Not only that...he has MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS! Weird cuz MS can sometimes be mis diagnosed when it is actually lyme.
Im not saying thats the issue in his case..but i just think he would be more open to a show on Lyme than our friend Oprah would. Just my 2cents

Hi everyone,

I would love to send something to Montel also. I have had the pleasure of meeting him years ago before this terrible thing called lyme invaded me. He worked out at a gym that I worked at. He was a very sincere individual. How I wish I could run into him now. Does anyone know how to contact him?

thanks,
karenb
