I just watched a dvd, named "Endurance". It is a documentary about a thwarted attempt to reach to South Pole in 1914, by a group of exporers, and led by a man named Shackleton (sp?).
They did not reach their destination, and it is about what they went through afterwards.
Quite a human inspiration to the will to survive.

This is a good one. One of my favorites is "The Long Walk," written by a man who escaped from a prison in Siberia and, with a small group of other people, WALKED to India. An amazing feat, especially considering they left in winter.

thanks for the tip! I can always get more INSPIRED!
By the way, and along this topic, I watched a show on Discovery Channel today called SURVIVED.
It's REALLY good, each episode shows a case of people who have survived extreme situations.
I watched a story about two brothers who faced death over and over during a hike in Utah's canyons. Very inspirational as well!

Thanks North star I am going to see if I can rent it on netflix.
My all time fav is Chariots of fire...love to watch them run too.
There is a scene in the movie where one of the runners is a preacher & gives a short sermon after a race.
He talks about comparing life to a race..."its hard...it takes concentration of will..and energy of soul...
Where does the power come from to see the race to it's end....from within"
Gets me every time.

i love this topic-- and did so even before lyme..
the Shackleton story is one of the greatest ever- an all time classic.
one of my personal favorites is the much shorter autobiography of St. Expierre. (dreadful spelling of the fellow who wrote "the little prince."
he in real life crashed his wwI spy-plane into a desert and lived to use his survival story to weave the tale of the little prince.
the moral of his real story became a cornerstore of my life philosphy decades ago. dehydrated to the point he no longer could sweat shed tears and hallucinating after days without water, near death, for himself he yearned to let go and die. he felt it would be a relief, not least for the easing of pain that had become unendurable.
but he couldn't lay down, couldn't give up. even the thought of it brought a flood of images of all those who love him who were still alive still waiting for him still trusting him.
The bonds - and obligations-- of trust and love kept him alive.
Personally, I'm finding that lesson more relevant with each month of this hellish struggle back towards health...
