hi, i am an infusion rn. i actually put in picc line's myself. try heat over the tender area. Is the pain at the insertion site or around your armpit? if it is at the insertion site, just watch for increased redness. they will check you out on monday. if the pain is at the armpit, it is due to manipulation and the tenderness is due to vein inflamation. use heat and try advil or motrin to help with the inflamation. this shouls be better by monday. another thing move your arm, use it. this also helps with the vein tenderness. if you start to run a fever or there is pussy drainageat the insertion site, you need to go to the er. most picc lines go in easily but if you were tensed up, thre might be a little more tenderness. just know what is going on sounds normal. heard that before!LOL

I had a midline for IV Rocephin for 3 months and near the end was finding pressure build up around where the top of the 8" tube would be and the pressure moved into my chest just below the collar bone and pecs.
Every ultrasound I had for clotting in the line was negative so I and my doc believe it is only from irritation from the tube.
I only take ibuprofen for it when needed and am able to take very hot showers again so that does seem to help.
I know it's different for everyone, but how long does something like this last?
Thank you for your knowledge and experience. Best Regards, Karl

karl1 from my experience, most midlines don't last very long. our policy was 2-4 wks of meds. 3 mos is a testament to your good vigilance.
because it is not in the superior vena cava(large vessel), the tip is sitting in a smaller vessel. the irritation could be vessel irritation from the antibiotic itself going thru a smaller vessel.
many antibiotics are caustic to vessells. if the pain continues, you might need a replacement. there could be damage to the vessel itself.
a true PICC sits in the superior vena cava, which is large and has a large blood flow, so the meds are more diluted in the bloodstream and don't cause vessel irritation.
watch it closely. you may need it replaced
good luck leogrl54

The midline was placed 8/26 and removed 11/28 at my left elbow and ran the 8" up the arm and the nurses did say it was in the large vein.
(When they changed bandages, 1xweek, the tube would slide in and out of my arm very easily -so I guess that was the big vein, S. vena cava. Looked like it.
Anyway, the insertion point seems to be healing nicely. I'll continue the ibuprofen, hot showers and exercising it on the treadmill and throughout the day.
I was just curious how long something like this might last on average. I know everyone is different.
Thank you again, Regards, Karl
