This car full of three stupid little kids hit me today. I was crossing the road, and they were stopped at a stop sign and decided to gun it when I was in the middle of the road... No major injury, to report, but the ER didn't do xrays, so were going to a Dr. tomorrow.
To add insult to injury, they stopped after they hit me, looked back, and drove away.
I got their license plate number and the cops are working on it... But I had to vent.
I am so p.o.'d right now. How can people do that???

Luckily the officer that came out was not a happy camper when he took the report. He said the state will prosecute to the full extent of the law since there's a witness and a license plate number.
He also urged me to pursue matters in civil court, which I intend to do. I will go after all three teens in the vehicle.

AP....This is good that you were able to get their license plate number. I hope they were able to locate the kids.
You might want to write down any details while it is fresh including what the kids may have looked like.
While working at a county jail, we had a guy spend some time because he was on the freeway with a water pistol.
People thought it was a gun.
So, I am hoping that these guys also are held accountable.
Drop us a line in the morning for the next few mornings and let us know how you are doing.
Hopefully, you will be fine.
How about a hot epsom salt bath?

So sorry to hear that, AP! And glad that you are mostly all right.
I agree with kam, write down all the details of the accident you can think of. For example, if you saw the kids' faces and they were all laughing or encouraging the driver to drive away, that adds to their culpability, since those who were not driving may try to deny guilt. (As far as I'm concerned, they left the scene also and did not contact the authorities -- they are all at least partly at fault!)
Get pictures of your damaged vehicle. Get pictures of the intersection, and look for any tire marks, indicating whether they tried to stop or evade the accident. Thank God you have a witness and a pi**ed off cop! Get their reports from the police department as soon as they are available.
If you need a rental car in the meantime, explain to the rental company that it is a replacement from an accident, and that you need rates that will be acceptable to the other insurance company. Most car rental places deal with this and will be able to help you or refer you.
Go over with your insurance company what they will do for you and what you must do. Do NOT sign anything from their insurance company without going over it with your insurance company first. Their insurance may try to settle only part of the claim, or throw in a clause that claims no fault and lets them recover their damages from you. If at all possible, have them deal with your insurance company, not you, then push your own company to get it done, and not raise your rates.
Even better, if you can afford one, get a lawyer, one who knows this field and won't put this on the back burner.
I speak from experience. My car was totaled on March 17, by an SUV that roared through a stop sign doing around 45 mph in a 25-mph zone. I am still waiting to receive a check for pain and suffering, which I agreed to in the amount of $2K. If they don't pay soon, I am getting a lawyer, the agreement will be off, and I will go after much more.
Best wishes, Shaz

And this is not uncommon. Things take time to swell. It sounds like you were hit hard - sorry to say but I will be surprised if you end up with no pain.
The chiropractor really helped my injury pain... I had it for months but I am ok now.
I also agree that you should write down everything you remember from the accident. Time fades healthy peoples memories.
It was probaly mommy's and daddy's car and they didnt want to get in trouble... or maybe they really didnt have their license yet.
I am glad you got their license plate number... after being hit I probaly would have been to shook up to realize I need it ..so good thinking.

To clarify, I was a pedestrian. I wasn't driving my car.
I'm very lucky in the sense that my parents are attorneys (though they're out of state and can't be my attorneys). My mom is extremely ****ed at these kids, but has been able to give me a ton of useful advice on dealing with insurance and finding a lawyer (through her rage).
As the hours are passing, I am in more and more pain. It's really hard to take a solid breath. Did I mention it was the arm my PICC line was in that was hit??? Chest XRays showed it's alright and I am able to infuse fine right now, but something doesn't feel right, if that makes any sense. I have a nurse visit in the morning, so I'll ask them what I should do regarding the PICC.
I'm going to try to get an MRI done tomorrow of my upper extremities. I'm not sure what the odds of getting one done locally are, but I think one is needed to determine wether there are more serious injuries.
Oh yeah, one more thing... The cops said that'd they may dust the hood ofthe car for evidence that it was the vehicle used to strike me... My whole hand made contact, so there'd be more than enough evidence (even though I have a witness).
I just hope they go to jail . Really, you can't just hit some one and keep going. I am actively looking for a lawyer.
I'll check in when I know more tomorrow.

I am still really mad at those little punks, and am waiting for a lawyer to call me back. I think my rage is getting me through this. Poor guys... before there wasn't anyone to really focus my lyme rage on.
Really sore this morning... Hard to type with 2 hands.
Called my Dr. she's looking over the ER records and will call me back to tell me I either need to go to the hospital, or go see her first.
Her office will call me within a half hour.

So glad you are okay and what a gift to have parents as attorneys. I'm continually amazed at the great advice one can get here.
Go after the brats, this is an awful thing to do to someone.

My goodness, AP - thank heavens you weren't hurt even worse. What a miracle. I'm also thankful you had the presence of mind to get the license plate - I doubt I would have been that sensible.
Now, why haven't the cops gotten the little jerks already?
Lawyer up for sure.
It wouldn't be unusual to continue to feel new aches and pains for a good while. They can take a bit to manifest. Please take every scan and diagnostic measure possible and brace for worsening soreness over the next week or two.

I'm in a ton of pain... Amidst the pain, I've fired my primary care provider and begun the complaint process to the VA Medical Board, against the ER Doc that saw (or didn't see) me the night I was hit. I figure if our LLMDs have to go into the fire so much, than this schmuck can definitely be held accountable for ignoring me.
I had a seried of XRays done in the ER yesterday. None of them showed any breaks. There may be a herniated/slipped disc, but getting hit by a car does not warrant an emergent MRI.
I called my auto insurance to file a claim. Even though I was a pedestrian, they'll cover medical expenses up to $2000. Not much, but it'll get me by while I wait for the punks insurance to set in. They need referrals for all of my future DR visits.
My PCP refuses to give me a referral to a doctor of osteopathy to have my back checked out. Said the day and a half of Vicodin was enough and to expect to be in pain for a few weeks. I asked for a referral to get an MRI... Nope.
So let's see. The City of Virginia Beach takes ten days before a hit and run accident can be investigated. It takes 5 days for a police report. Getting hit by a car does not warrant any type of testing, and you're lucky if the doctor will even look at you. If you say you felt your PICC line jab your heart, and that it hurts, you're obviously imagining it, because its "like the size of a spaghetti noodle" and will only "tickle" your heart, and it's a one in a million chance it'll do damage, nevermind the odds of being hit by a car in the arm your PICC line is in and having the car drive off (what are the chances of that?).
Now why is it that my doctor has told me not to lift heavy objects, extend my PICC line arm over my head, etc, etc, etc... But I can get hit by a car, which pushes my PICC arm into my body, and that's OK????
I think I may call my LLMD tomorrow and see about some further testing.... He is, after all not in the same city/state.
Words for the wise.... Don't ever vacation in Virginia Beach. If anything happens, you're screwed.

AP, I'm so sorry that this happened and you're in this much pain.
I think you can go to the osteopath without a referral if it's on the car insurance? Seems you wouldn't need one if your regular medical insurance wasn't involved, no?
Call up, tell them you were hit by a car and make an appointment. Tell them the car insurance is paying.
When I as rear-ended on the bridge, I went to the ER and the next day to the chiropractor. The ER found nothing, the Chiropractor found a ton of stuff whacked out and very severe whiplash. My car insurance covered all of that, none of it had anything to do with my regular medical.
I can't believe the little sh*ts hit you, stopped and made sure and then took off.
Rest up as best you can and see if you can get into see the osteopath or a great chiro.
I hope you feel better soon and they nail the little creeps.

for me, it's the onther way around. BC/BS could care less about a referral, and i can go to anyone, anywhere. (they've really taken care of me in my travels overseas)... State Farm, on the other hand, needs referrals for everything. Which is understandable. I don't blame them, I blame the retarded doctors that figure since I can stand on two legs (though I am hunched over), the car didn't do any damage.
Just let me find something wrong. All three doctors that have been resposible for my care will see what our poor LLMDs are faced with everyday.

AP, go get em.
Another thing to try:
Call your local District Attorney's Office.
In our County, there's a fund for Victims of Crime.
They might ante up for some of your medical expenses, at least until the little wretches can be found.
Call the cops up and demand a status on their investigation. What's the holdup? Why hasn't an arrest been made? Complain to the D.A.'s office.
But for a coupla feet, you might have been killed.
An MRI is totally reasonable to ask for. Xray is unlikely to show bulging disks.
Keep pushing, and hope you're feeling better.

It sounds like you need to call the officer twice a day or more for an update. IF they havent caught them by now,,,chances are they arent going to. OR it was somebody specials kids and they cant be 'touched'(LOTS of that goes on!!)
I can understand your anger at the time,,,however I think you do need to NOT let anger rule your life and govern your every action. IF you forgive and forget 'some' of this,,,your healing my be improved!!
It just cant be THAT hard to find a car with the plate number. Around here I could call a favor and get persons name if thats what I wanted. Maybe the ONLY way to get these kids is to hire a private detective. That MAY find the car owner but not the kids involved(unless it was stolen joy ride thing)
Forgive and forget,,,you may feel better and 'see' a chiropractor for good treatment. Regular doctors dont care!!

It's not that they aren't willing to make an arrest, it's that it takes 10 days to process a hit and run for "quality assurance" purposes.
Whatever. I know State Farm already has them. They were more than happy to run the plates and start calling their insurance for payment. It's just against privacy laws to give me their info.
Which is good. No telling what I might do to them... (Someone made a suggestion that I should throw a bucket of pig's blood on their car.) I'd rather fight this one out in court than risk doing something dumb.
As far as forgiving and forgetting... I am allowed to be angry. I was hit by a car filled with teens that didn't stop. That's disgusting. It's absolutely unforgivable. I have genuine injuries that the doctors are ignoring. I'm only 25. I don't need to be in pain for the rest of my life because of some punk kids, and doctors that can't get it through their heads that maybe I know my body a little better than they do.
I think I am being a lot more level-headed about this than some people would be (see pig's blood comment above). After the accident, I am unable to cross the road without extreme anxiety. Nevermind if there is a car in it, waving me to cross. How do I know they aren't going to mow me down? I have trouble riding in a car. I freak out if there's a pedestrian, and when I see brake lights, I hold my breath.

I don't know were some kids get their morals from. Don't rest until they are caught and punished.
A few years ago my Son was robbed by 3 guys, the worse thing about it, he knew one of them. He was on the same rugby team and they traveled to Britain together. He is also a son of a well known news broadcaster in our areas .
They were all eventually caught and punished,3 months in a juvenal(sp) home
Anyway, take care your friend Cassie

AP-
I am so sorry that this happened to you!
How are you doing? Is your piccline discomfort settling down?
My kids have had picclines and I can't imagine getting hit by car with one. Or with the lyme alone. You just don't need all this.
An incident like this is traumatic! and often does cause Post Traumatic Stress. Counseling can really help and doesn't necessarily take a lot of sessions.
I developed PTSS because of exposure to violence as a child and getting help for it is hands down one of the most helpful things I have ever done for myself.
I am so sorry this happened!!!!! I hope you don't have permanent injuries. I would be so angry (once I got over the shock). Glad you had the presence of mind to get the license #.
No matter what the ER dr. or PCP says, please get your PICC line checked. You know what you're feeling. Don't let those ducks tell you anything differently. I've had to change drs. to get help, too. You are so much wiser than me because I gave the duck 3 months to find the problem. Glad you fired the duck already.
Basically, the way you describe the accident, it sounds like it was a hit and run. The idiots hit you, looked back and then took off. Maybe the cops are taking a long time to get the report done, but "hit and run" has gotta carry a lot of weight with the insurance company. BTW, do the punks actually have insurance coverage?
A few years ago, my parents were driving in their car when another car ran a red light and struck their car, twice. My parents were taken to the ER via ambulance to a top notch facility. My parents were 60 years old. The stupid ER dr. didn't even order one X-ray. (The crash was so bad that a passenger in the other car died a few days later). The ER dr. basically checked my parents over and sent them home. The next day my mom had a seizure. She had never had a seizure before. Back to the ER we went. This time they did an X-ray but no MRI. Fast forward 7 years. My mom suffered a condition directly caused by this accident. It should have been caught 7 years ago and would have with an MRI.
No matter what, pursue this as far as you can. Make sure your PICC line is really O.K. You are not imagining it! Get an MRI or whatever tests you need. No matter if the ducks don't understand, it's not their body.
Keep us posted, O.K.?

it happens after you go through the anger and the loss, not right away. at some time in the future, should you choose to let go of all of the "stuf" it will be soon enough.

Thank you for your concern. I have been in a horizontal position for days now, and still feel like there's some bone one bone action in my back. I went to the urgent care clinic last night (since I don't have a primary anymore) and they gave me a referral (which I needed for auto insurance) to a Chiropractor. He said that if he was in my position, he'd probably be asking for the same things I am (an MRI and a Orthopedic Surgeon)but right now it's not his call. The Chiropractor may say that she is not able to help me.
I'm happy that I am finally getting somewhere, medically.
On the other hand. There's finally a hit and run detective on my case. He's a shmuck. Said it was probably an accident and the kids didn't see me before they hit me.... I said that part probably was an accident, but driving away from the scene was a deliberate act, for which they should be held responsible. I can't believe they'd just let someone roam the streets like this.

It was an accident? Whatever happened to driver responsibility? lack of = negligence
First off, was it in an intersection/crosswalk: I always thought no matter what, pedestrians have the right of way.
What was your location in the intersection upon impact? If you were in the middle, and they had clear view, I would think they would be responsible (as opposed to you stepping in front of them from the curb).
Do you have a public defender/prosecutor?
Slack excuse from your investigator.......there was a field fire about 15 years ago, next to our house. I saw the kids do it. When talking to the policeman, he tried to pass out the old excuse that kids will be kids. I vehemently disagreed, saying that 13 year old kids know better. (these were kids with no disabilities other than being Supremely Obnoxious).
These kids need to accept their responsibilities and consequences of negligence, rather than being juvenilized.

I had taken a few steps into the road, and was 3-5 feet from the sidewalk when they gunned it. There wasn't a crosswalk, but there was a wheelchair ramp in the sidewalk and cemented passage through the grassy median for pedestrians. I was not crossing illegally. I wasn't wearing dark clothing, and it was a beautiful day.
Do you have a public defender/prosecutor? My mother, a Harvard lawyer, is flying out in 2 weeks to help me find one that has my interests (not his wallet) in mind.
If the city does not step up, I will. There is a huge hit and run problem here, and now I know why. I will hold them (the city and the driver/owner of the car) responsible for what has happened.

AP, You said they gunned it. Do you know if they 'saw' you? Did they try to avoid you, steer away or delibrately aim at you, steer toward you???
Or completely neutral,,,meaning not steer towards or away,,alot like they never saw you at all?
Any brakes applied before hitting you? IF they deliberately hit you,,,that sure would be grounds for going the limit after them!!!
Could you see the driver OR any passengers after the hit?? Look of fear,??? look of smiles??? smug satisfaction??
Can they find the car and find any forensic evidence on it?? Like fibers?fingerprints? I sure would 'squeak' to the police to DO this!! ITS there JOB!!!!
Sure sounds like they were high and on a lark!!!

OK... Went to the Chiro today. We love him! He's relatively aware of what Lyme does to the body, and I may even go as far as saying he's lyme friendly. He said that a normal person may take about 6 weeks to feel back to normal, but with the Lyme complicating things, it may be a few months.
He's not 100% sure I didn't slip or herniate a disk. We'll know better after he does his therapy for about 2 weeks.
Still not sure if the city is going to make an arrest, or even issue a ticket. Don't remember wether or not I posted about this yesterday, but the schmuck of a detective told me they probably hit me on accident... DUH! Seriously, did that even need to be said? I told him that though hitting me was an accident, driving away was a deliberate act. They demonstrated their knowledge of the collision when they stopped breifly and sped off. Really? did I need to explain that to him?

I am so sorry to hear you have to deal with all this
Your post kind of freaked me out because I got hit by car (way back in 1991) in Sandbridge, which is just outside of Va Beach. My friend and I were standing on the sidewalk near a 7-11 and a car full of teens was on a beer run and came up on the sidewalk and hit us. They then backed up and took off down the road. Luckily, a woman at 7-11 had the sense to get into her car and follow them. The police later went to the house and the driver came forward.
I can't say my experience with the Va beach police/lawyers was much better though. The criminal case took about 6 months to go before the judge, and the charges were dropped from hit and run to reckless driving. I remember the lawyers saying 'this is just a kid, you don't want him to have a felony on his record for a mistake he made'. Although pretty big mistake that involved crutches for 6 weeks and months of physical therapy....
The civil suit was better, and we did get reimbursed for all medical bills and a little extra. Not much though, as the kid was driving without insurance. I think all in all the process took at least a year.
So anyways, just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear that you're going through all this. I know how difficult those policeman and lawyers can be... And especially having to go through this with lyme - UGH. I think you're definitely on the right track with the chiropractor. I went years after the accident and really should have gone right away.
I hope things work out for the best for you. Pam

To my Clinda infusion, I have added: Sulfa, Ketek, Mepron, and something else that I just don't feel good enough to remember right now.
Still with the Chiropractor. He hasn't even begun the rehab, just trying to get my body to want to move again. I had a session today, and he made my back feel better (as a massage usually does), but when I went to leave, my hip gave out (the one that Lyme has always attacked). I'm kinda a mess with the whole med change right now.
Epsom salt baths are doing a lot of good, it's just trying to get out of the tub.
Was told last week Virginia Beach would not be pressing charges because it was me that hit the car. Can't figure it out, and we're having the situation evaluated over again since my statement was never oficially taken.
Thanks for the concern I'm really hanging in there.

Trust me, they will be prosecuted, civally.... I just would like something done about the fact that someone hit me with a damn car and just drove away. I have no idea who this littl punk girl is, nor do I care.
I wasn't raised here, and I haven't been here long. I don't know who's who, but it's obvious, in light of this felony being overlooked, the big dummy knows some one.

The city of Virginia Beach apparantly has a law that says if you don't fall down when you're hit by a car, "it's no big deal." I wish I was kidding.
Additionally, the commonwealth attorney's office told both my mother and myself that I HIT THE CAR, not the other way around. ?!?!?!?!?!?
Some one listened to my heart for the first time this week. (post accident). There's a murmur that wasn't there when I had a ton of tests (I was a heart patient in the hospital for 3 days because I was passing out) a couple months ago.
The Dr. shook her head wildly when I told her about feeling my PICC line stab my heart.
I'm still trying to find just the right attorney... I've been too sick the past 2 weeks to play phone tag with people, so the search hasn't really gone anywhere.
We'll see what happens, but as far as the little girl that hit me and drove off, she did not break the law.

Unfortunately, the fact that my mother is a Harvard lawyer, doesn't mean anything outside of the state she's licensed in.
She tried to talk to the commonwealth attorney's office, but it was useless. The special ops sargeant spoke to her until she said she was an attorney in Washington... then he went silent.
Obviously something is up, and this girl knows some one, but there's no way for me to prove anything.
I've been so sick, and I am trying to pick up a class or two at the community college so I can pick my life back up. I just ran out of gas with regards to the hit and run. I don't even have the fight in me to go through civil court. Seriously, how far would that go when the commonwealth atty and VBPD all say that I hit the car???

That is the strangest thing. It's like saying an airplane didn't crash. The ground moved up and hit it.
I would have to fight that, if only on principle.
Can you call your local newspaper or tv stations and get them to air your story.
It may generate enough attention to require a change in the law or some satisfaction for you.
How horrible. Where are the parents of these degenerates? Why haven't they stepped up to the plate and taken responsibility for their juvenille deliquents?
I am so sorry you are going through this. I hope that you start feeling better soon.
Sending you positive healing thoughts and prayers.

I provided the name and phone nuber to the witness who drove me home after I was hit. She saw everything... That's why she gave a stranger a ride home.
I think this girl's father is the puppeteer... He was at the police station with her for her interview.
Really, like my boyfriend has said, they should at least have the decency to call and apologize.

If they apologized, that would be the same as admitting wrong doing.
If you have a few witnesses, it would help your case, especially if you go to the media. You gave the good samaritan your number, but you do not have hers?
Also, are there stores/store witnesses/security cameras nearby?

Pedistrians "ALWAYS" have the right of way,,,even if they are jaywalking!!! Lo and behold you hit a ped-X,,, here!! Or say, a kid on a bicyle.
So what lasting damage have they done,,now that you can 'think' about it, got your ego bruises healed and just down to permanent lasting damages,,,after the brusises healed???
I dont understand what your saying with doc shaking his head?? Shaking his head no, it didnt bother your picc,,,or shaking head yes it probably DID affect your picc and /or heart???
I think your insurance company should, could go after their car insurance for the cost of damages incurred from the accident, resulting doctor bills, tests, and all.
I cant see where hitting someone and they fall down or NOT has anything to do with the accident.
Does that mean if they break your arm it isnt really broke, just your imagination,,sorta like a lyme attitude!!??????
I forget,,,was there stoplights at the corner, stop 'signs'?? What traffic control devices were there??
Did they have an impeded line of sight??Bushes, trees, other cars?? Who had the right-of-way?? I assume you werent walking 'against' the lights.
Around here all they talk about is contributory negligence. Each party was negligent in a per cent of the accident. You might 'FEEL' you were 100% right, they 100% wrong,,,but it might not be percieved that way to juries with sharp attorneys on the defense.
Ever see the show "sharks",,,Just like poker,,,all cases can be won or lost,,,depending on the presentation, and who CARES the most!!
Sorta like who can afford the most expensive justice. Sad its that way,,,indeed it is!!Hope you heal 110% and get past this!!!being --just don--
