A friend e-mailed this to me and I think it is worthy of consideration.

In October of 2001, my sister started getting very sick. She had stomach spasms and she was having a hard time getting around. Walking was a major chore. It took everything she had just to get out of bed; she was in so much pain.

By March 2002, she had undergone several tissue
and muscle biopsies and was on 24 various prescription medications. The doctors could not determine what was wrong with her. She was in so much pain, and so sick, she just knew she was dying. She put her house, bank accounts, life
insurance, etc., in her oldest daughter's name, and made sure that her younger children were to be taken care of. She also wanted her last hooray, so she planned a trip to Florida (basically in a wheelchair) for March 22nd.

On March 19 I called her to ask how her most
recent tests went, and she said they didn't find anything on the test, but they believe she had MS. I recalled an article a friend of mine e-mailed to me and I asked my sister if she drank diet soda? She told me that she did. As a matter of fact, she was getting ready to crack one open that moment. I told her not to open it, and
to stop drinking the diet soda! I e-mailed her the article my friend, a lawyer, had sent.

My sister called me within 32 hours after our
phone conversation and told me she had stopped drinking the diet soda AND she could walk! The muscle spasms went away. She said she didn't feel 100% but she sure felt a lot better. She
told me she was going to her doctor with this
article and would call me when she got home.

Well, she called me, and said her doctor was amazed! He is going to call all of his MS patients to find out if they consumed artificial
sweeteners of any kind.

In a nutshell, she was being poisoned by the
Aspartame in the diet soda...
and literally dying a slow and miserable death.

When she got to Florida March 22, all she had to take was one pill, and that was a pill for the
Aspartame poisoning! She is well on her way to a
complete recovery. And she is walking! No wheelchair! This article saved her life.

We need to think twice, if not a hundred times, before we put chemicals in our bodies.

There are those doctors who believe that at least 10% of early onset Alzheimers is caused by innoculations.

We must question the insatiable greed of the pharmaceutical companies.

Read Kevin Trudeau's two books. Really an eye opener on what Big Pharma and the food companies are conspiring against our health....all for monetary gain.

I have read Kevin Trudeau's first book and am re-reading it again as I wait for the second book to be delivered. He makes some very good points and makes you stop and really think about things.

I quit drinking the diet cokes because of the aspartame after I was diagnosed with breast cancer.

However, I have replaced it with "Splenda". I use Splenda for my iced tea and I buy Diet Rite Cola because they use "Splenda".

Does anyone know anything about "Splenda"?
Are there any dangers I need to know about it?

Thanks!! [Smile]

Thanks monica for posting the article on Aspartame [Smile]

here's some links on Aspartame. Scroll way down to the links under aspartame:

www.laleva.cc/contacts/contacts.html

Here's a link to info on xylitol. I like this along with stevia. Some people experience GI side effects (loose stools). I only use it sparingly so not a problem for me.

Here's a link on splenda:

when my mom quit drinking diet coke, she noticed a change instantly. Much of her chronic muscle pain, especially in her chest, greatly subsided.

As far as I know, Splenda is a good, safe substitute for sugar.

Then again, who knows??

I don't have the box of Splenda that my daughter uses in front of me, but I checked it out and the ingredients list two "chemical like" names.

Also, the manufacturer is McNeil Foods. Part of the McNeil Pharmaceutical family.

Ok, I am a diet coke expert. You do not see me unless I have one in my hand. As a matter of fact I get it straight from coke. 72 20 oz bottles a week for my family. I am addicted bad. When I was in the hospital my friends at work send me an article about this.

What to believe though. Even if I do try to stop. How do I go about it.

I know I can not quit cold turkey.

I drink alot of diet beverages and need to drink alot (not much water) [bonk]

OK - I did some research.
www.splenda.com
and
www.sucralose.org

Splenda is made from sugar and converted to sucralose. Here is some information I found. I put in the links above if anyone wants to read more. I like the fact that it was tested, approved, and used in other countries BEFORE the FDA approved it for here.

About those diet cokes - yes, I was just as addicted to the diet caffeine free as I used to be to Mt. Dew!!
I've totally cut back on drinking carbonated beverages of any kind. I opened a 12-pack of Diet-Rite (made with Splenda) on Super Bowl Sunday and I've only had 4 of them! However, I made myself a promise that for every one I drink, I must also follow it with that much water - in addition to any other water I drink. I guess my own personal theory is that I am flushing it out!! Sort of having my cake and eating it too!

Here's some of the info:
McNeil Nutritionals, LLC is committed to developing innovative nutritional products, such as the SPLENDA Sweetener Products, that provide important health and lifestyle benefits to consumers. The company is extremely proud of the strong clinical database that supports the safety of sucralose, the sweetening ingredient in all SPLENDA Sweetener Products, and we recognize that this strong safety evidence is one of the many reasons why SPLENDA No Calorie Sweetener has been the number-one low-calorie sweetener in the U.S. marketplace for more than three years.

Sucralose has been available in international markets for more than 13 years. The FDA first approved the use of sucralose as a nonnutritive sweetener in 1998 and expanded this approval in 1999. Currently, sucralose is permitted for use in over 80 countries and it has never been required to carry any safety information or warning statements on its labeling.

Although sucralose is made from sugar, the body does not recognize it as sugar or a carbohydrate. It is not metabolized by the body for energy, so it is calorie-free.

Sucralose (or SPLENDA Brand Sweetener), the high intensity sweetener used in the SPLENDA Products is not natural. It is a no calorie sweetener that is made from a process that starts with sugar.

It is manufactured using a patented multi-step process that begins with sugar, in which 3 hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar (sucrose) molecule are selectively replaced with 3 chlorine atoms. Because it is made from sugar, sucralose (SPLENDA Brand Sweetener) tastes like sugar and is about 600 times sweeter than sugar.

The tightly bound chlorine atoms are exceptionally stable and prevent the sucralose molecule from being metabolized for energy. As a result, studies show that sucralose does not elevate blood glucose or serum insulin levels. The chlorine atoms also provide heat stability, enabling sucralose to withstand the rigors of cooking and baking without losing sweetness.

Absorption and distribution
The majority (about 85%) of consumed sucralose is not absorbed and passes through the gastrointestinal tract unchanged. Approximately 15% of ingested sucralose is passively absorbed, which is related to the fact that sucralose is a very small, very water soluble molecule. Because it is highly water soluble, absorbed sucralose is distributed to essentially all tissues. Sucralose is not lipophilic and does not bioaccumulate. Radiolabel studies show that sucralose is not actively transported across the blood-brain barrier, the placental barrier, or the mammary gland.

Metabolism
Sucralose is not recognized by the body as a carbohydrate--it is not broken down for energy and provides no calories. Approximately 2% of ingested sucralose is biotransformed into toxicologically insignificant components and excreted in the urine. Sucralose does not bind to blood or other proteins. There is also no dechlorination or breakdown of the molecule to its component monosaccharide-like derivatives.

I am not sold on the safety of "Splenda."

Here are some potential problems with it as published on Wikipedia:

Sucralose is a chlorocarbon
Up to 27% of sucralose that is ingested is absorbed into the body by the digestive system
Long-term human studies with sucralose have not been performed.
It's also noteworthy that the world's leading retailer of natural and organic foods, with outlets in the U.S. and U.K., made an official policy statement of not carrying products containing sucralose in any of its outlets. The retailer's health-related concerns revolved around five essential points:

Sucralose is an artificial substance, some of which is absorbed by the body
Pre-approval tests indicated a potential for toxicity
Sucralose is a chlorinated compound (a chlorocarbon)
Independent, controlled human studies had not been performed
Long-term human studies with sucralose had not been performed

Thanks Monica.
Maybe I should cut back. I use it for my iced tea, which I drink more of than the diet-rites, however, I still don't drink either of them on a daily basis. I drink lots of water and milk and apple juice!!
I forgot to go back to my search page and read the wikipedia entry, so thanks again.
It's been a long time since I've been on much, but I have done better the past couple weeks.
Good to see your post! [Smile]

I forgot to add:
Since I saw that sucralose had been used in foreign countries for so long, I didn't pay attention that they hadn't done long-term studies.
So, thanks again!!

There was a very interesting program today on "Link," about pharmaceutical companies and the games they play.

Most have large marketing budgets; far larger than their research and development funds.

They keep directing us (through our physicians) to more and more expensive drugs that do little or nothing more than drugs we already have. Change the packaging, add a little stripe on the capsule and voila! You have a "new" drug.

They can make minute chemical changes to existing drugs in order to protect their expiring patents.

Sorry I can't remember the name of the program, but I hope it is on again soon.

The more I learn about the pharmaceutical companies, even when they are "disguised" as food companies or consumer advocate groups, the more frightened I am.
