Hi all, Just wanted to share my horse camping weekend with you. It was better than I expected.
I had a phone consult on Thursday just before we left to camp in the high country. I asked if I could go off the antibiotics for a few days because I didn't want to be herxing. It seemed to work.
I had very good days. I'm sure it's due in part to the relaxing atmosphere of camping at 9000 feet elevation in the pines and aspens surrounded by snowcapped peaks. But I did so much better than I expected.
I rode trails three days in a row. That is a record for me. What was even better was friends had brought enough horses that I didn't have to bring my own.
So all the horse care and saddling was done by someone else. That saved my energy for just the riding.
When I ride my own horse, usually by the time I have groomed and saddled him, I am too tired to ride for very long. So, this was great for me.
We had perfect weather and trail conditions. It was such fun, I can't wait to do it again. And I felt pretty good.
Well, just had to share.

I enjoyed reading of your weekend. Provides a bit of vicarious living. More more-tell us more.
where did you sleep? tents or cabins? what did you eat? over a campfire?
We camp in style. No more tent camping for us. We have RVs. So, we have real beds, a furnace even a microwave when we run the generator. We cook on a gas stove and oven.
We went just a few miles from our homes into the high country where the peaks reach around 13,000 feet. We have had so much rain this spring that everything is super green and sweet smelling.
We camped in a large meadow so we could hobble the horses and they could move around and eat grass. There were several streams so water for the horses wasn't a problem.
We all brought enough food to feed an army. We each made supper for everybody else on one night then one night was "steak" night when everyone brings their own steak that is cooked on a grille.
There were three couples including us. We had a campfire every night that we sat around as it would get very cold when the sun went down. We gathered dead mistletoe which is full of pitch and burns very fast and hot. It is fun to watch. Then we would go to bed in our heated RVs.
One couple brought three horses and one brought her one horse. On one day, another gal came up and she brought her two horses up. For those of us who ride, there were plenty of horses.
The weather was perfect. It had rained for about 3 days straight before we went so we were worried the trip would be a washout but it cleared off and was sunny every day we were there. Pleasant temperatures in the 60's during the day.
We rode on old logging roads and game trails going up in elevation. We saw a few elk and some fresh bear scat. We had to cross several streams but the horses are seasoned trail horses and they did fine. No one got hurt. Well, ok, I have a few bruises from the saddle horn from when the horse would lurch up from steep stream beds.
We were in an area where there weren't any other people. We saw a few cars and one day there were some 4-wheelers that went by but there were no campers near us. It was all very quiet, peaceful and serene. We could hear coyotes at night.
We all slept in every morning and had leisurely breakfasts before we would saddle up and ride. This is the very best way to vacation in my opinion. I am hoping to get well so I can enjoy it even more in the future.

Someday I hope to see Colorado because I hear it is very beautiful there!
