My future son-in-law has chronic hiccups daily, sometimes for a period of 3-4 hours at a time, several times in a day. Then, they will go away but they always come back.

He does not have Lyme, but I thought I would post to see if anyone knows of a remedy. They are getting married at the end of this month, and, it would be a relief for him not to hiccup during the "I do" part!

I wonder if probiotics (Theralac) and digestive enzymes would help that. Does anyone know? Maybe, he could try it for a few weeks to see if it would calm this "inner glitch".

If anyone knows of a remedy, I'll let him know. I think he's willing to try anything. His doc was no help.

Thanks

I used to get them all the time! I can't stand it and I don't know how he can tolerate several hours at a time!! [Eek!]

My remedy has always been:

Drink water VERY slowly while someone holds your ears shut tight. Keep that throat "open" while slowly drinking....and of course, holding your breath.

If I'm alone, I get a straw and hold my own ears! Works every time once you get the hang of it.

Also....Google "hiccups" and find other remedies in case this one doesn't work for him!

I think if he'll stop all caffeine and/or carbonated beverages it may help also. His esophagus is probably irritated, to say the least!

Let me know if my remedy works for him!

It wouldn't hurt to try the enzymes or Theralac.

someone in the physical therapy room had them the other day when i was there.

she gave her daughter a pen and told her to go into the bathroom, PUT PEN UNDER THE TONGUE, and drink water down from a glass or paper cup; works everytime for her. her dear grandma taught her this!

daughter came back saying water went everywhere and they were done .... surprise; started again.

she didn't have a cup or glass to drink the water from. so that's my donation tonight! [lol]

Drinking water seems to be the key in getting the diaphram back in sync.

For my daughter, I hold the bottle of water while she drinks. She starts with her hands above her head,(straight arms) then slowly lowers them to her side as she drinks.

If she is home alone, she takes in as much water as she can, then slowly swallows while holding her breath.

Thanks Lymetoo, Betty & Kelly. The wedding is in 3 weeks, so I'm hoping these remedies work fast for him! I emailed these suggestions to him.

Lymetoo, you are too sweet...thanks for upping my post.

There is a very effective homeopathic remedy: "cuprum metallicum" 5C, three granules under the hiccupper's tongue and he is ready for a hiccups-free wedding [woohoo]

Sylvie,

I'm not familiar with that remedy, but I'll try and find some info about it and give it to him. Yes, it would be wonderful for him to have a hiccup-free wedding!

Thanks very much.

He might try some craniosacral therapy. It might relieve tension in the diaphragm. Good luck!

Drink water from the far side of the cup.

Put your lips on the far side so your head goes upside down and the cup is tipping away from your body.

It doesn't always cure them, but it usually makes them go away for a while.

Also....is he staying away from all forms of caffeine?? Citrus and citric acid may also cause spasms.

Fortunately, he does not drink coffee and he does drink lots of water. He is taking advice that everyone posted here (thank you), except drugs.

He is hoping alternatives/herbs, etc., will help. His doctor did at one time give him a very strong drug (don't know what it was) and he became a little space-like, which was a little scary, so he is sticking with alternative/herb treatment.

Thanks very much.

Seems everyone has a recipe to free him from hiccups [Wink]

About the homeopathic medication I suggested, "cuprum metallicum 5C" is copper diluted ten billion times, so it is totally innocuous, no risk to be space-like.

I use the drinking from the far edge of a glass too, when I don't have cuprum metallicum at hand. Somewhat acrobatic, but works!

Good luck!
