State Rep. Art Hershey (R-Chester) is hosting a free forum on Lyme disease and co-infections in an effort to provide residents with information helpful to them in the prevention and treatment of the disease.
``I encourage local residents to join me for an informational day that will separate fact from fiction, and provide families with what they need to know to help prevent contracting these diseases and what signs to look for if infected,'' said Hershey.
The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at the Cochranville Fire House located on Limestone Road (Route 10) in Cochranville.
The forum is being conducted by the Lyme Disease Association of Southeastern Pennsylvania. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Ann Corson, a Lyme disease treating physician from Cochranville.
First recognized in the United States in 1975, Lyme disease is prevalent in the northeast and northcentral states, which includes Pennsylvania. The bacteria that causes the disease is spread by the deer tick, which feeds on various forms of wildlife, including the white-tailed deer, mice, other mammals and birds. Ticks usually transmit Lyme disease to humans during late spring and summer.
