Hi Good Folks

Been lurking for 2 1/2 years and have learned so much here. THANK YOU!

Needless to say I have Lyme, Babesia and all the wonderful ills that seem to go along with this lifestyle. (Seeing Dr Z in VA)

Two of my children were treated last year and seem to be doing well. That's the good news [Smile]

The bad news is my 15year old came to me tonight and said "Look Mom, a bullseye!" She had pulled a tick off herself Wed and now she has the rash [Frown]

I might be able to get our PCP to prescribe 2 weeks doxy, but it's the week-end, so not until Monday. I don't want to take her to the chop shop (hospital).

I'm off to seeking, Dr Z doesn't see kids.

I have Erythromycin Base 250 mg tabs.

Omnicef 300mg

Clindamycin 150 mg

A small amount of Doxy 50mg

I thought about the Doxy, but not sure on dose. She weighs about 108 lbs.

Got enough doxy to get her to Monday??

I would think maybe 200mg would be enough if that's all you have.

I am NOT a doctor!!!

I do and 200 was what I was thinking too, but then questioned if it would be enough.

Thanks, I know you're not a Dr! So much more to you than one of those [Big Grin]

I weigh about 105lbs and took 300mg of doxy a day.

Even if you go to a walk in clinic and claim a sinus infection or something,

May be able to get a Rx for doxy for 10 days (at least enough to get you to Monday).

Darn ticks!!!!

Hugs,

Geneal

Welcome.

So sorry your daughter has the bull's eye, but glad she knew what it meant.
Also, it's good that you understand the need for early treatment.

Print "Diag Hints & Treatment Guidelines..."
33 pages of excellent info.
www.ilads.org/burrascano_0905.html

p.17: Antibiotic Choices & Doses
Lyme needs stronger dose of antibiotic than is usually prescribed.
Example -
Typical Doxycycline dose for Adult is 200 mg per day, but Lyme treatment needs to be 400mg per day.
Recommended dose for teens is not given.

p.19: Treatment Categories
Early Localized - EM rash, no symptoms
Recommends treatment for 6 weeks - minimum

The "walk in clinic" is a good idea, if you have one in your area.
Take Dr B's "Guidelines" (above) and see if Dr will prescribe as recommended.

If not, when you see the PCP on Mon, take the "Guidelines" with you.
It is important that treatment is strong enough and long enough.
If not, the disease will seem to be cured, but will flare up again in the future (months or years later).

You said 2 children were treated last year.
Who treated them?

I agree that more than 200mg would be great if you've got it. I was going the conservative route since it didn't sound like you had that much.

I think most Urgent Care places would treat with that bullseye staring them in the face.... and having a proactive mom staring them in the face!! [Big Grin]

Also.. Be sure to take a picture with a coin next to it and maybe a newspaper for a date... and then one with her face in the pic along with the bullseye.. Just in case you ever need it for proof to insurance or to a doctor.

Lymetoo,
I wasn't sure about how much Doxy she had on hand.
Hope I didn't sound like I was disagreeing with you. You've forgotten more than I'll ever know about TBDs, and besides, I haven't even stayed at the Holiday Inn Express. [Smile]

Liked your suggestion of Urgent Care (Geneal, too) and just added to that idea.
In some places, the "walk in clinic" has worked well.
I think it always helps if you have reliable info printed to give them.
Has more credibility than a mother making recommendations.

I assume since you've been here for over two years you know that 2 weeks doxy is like spitting in the ocean as far as treating Lyme Disease.

You may want to ask Dr. Z about specifically seeing her for Lyme. Our LLMD is not a pediatrician, but she treats my daughter for Lyme, as long as we agree to see her regular pediatrician for all other ailments.

Try to get a better picture so whoever sees her doesn't think it's "just a local reaction" to the tick bite. There's a difference.

Hope she got it all when she pulled it off.

Good luck to you.

The two younger ones were treated 4 and 6 months by Dr V in MD. One had 23 ticks and the other had 28! PCP pulled out IDSA guidelines [Roll Eyes] and I went directly to the front desk for a referral to Dr V for a second opinion [Big Grin]

I have a feeling that's where we will end up this time. I was hoping there might be someone closer.

I did take more pics with a ruler next to the ring. I did not take one with her face or date, I will do that! I think my camera may do better outside in the light of day. Thanks again.

Yes, I was glad she told me right away when she saw it. She had another bite, but no reaction there at all [confused]

The thing that gets me is, they get sprayed down with the DEET before leaving the porch. Reapply often and they are diligent in checking for ticks. Doesn't seem fair.

I guess, I'm feeling a bit frustrated too.

We got up this morning and the Bullseye was totally GONE!

Good thing I took more pictures last night!

 -

 -

Went to Urgent care this morning. The pictures sealed it, luckily. Dr said "Classic Lyme."

Sigh of relief, until treatment discussion. They just wanted to do 200mgs for 10 days. She asked me if I was seeing a ID Doc, I said "No Way."

No more argument, she said "What do you think?"
I said, "Last time her PCP gave her 200mgs twice a day."

She said, "for 21 days?" I said "sure" She had to ask her Supervisor.
She came back and the Rx was for 28days, her supervisor had told her to write for the longer end [Big Grin]

Follow up with PCP for testing. That will give me time to order kits from Igenex [Big Grin]

YEAH!

Great pics!!

Could I possibly get your permission to send them to me to use in a powerpoint presentation?? NO names would be given unless you wanted.

I now collect rash pics.....plus run a support group. You can email me privately to let me know.

Take care,

Gail
