I am getting another article out on Lyme disease for the walk this time in the Outdoors section of the newspaper:

Here is a link to his blog- http://www.stargazette.com/blogs/outdoors/notebook/

Hope it's good!

victoria, OUTSTANDING!!

A twist of Lyme

I'm going to take a moment to pass along a public service announcement here.

I had an interesting and also disturbing meeting earlier this week with a young lady named Victoria Wilcox.

Victoria is only 17 but she's spent more time in the last three years in hospitals than she has in school.

Why? Victoria had the misfortune to contract Lyme disease, a bacterial infection spread by deer ticks.

The problem is she was misdiagnosed for months and now she has lingering health issues that will probably be with her for the rest of her life.

Victoria felt it was important to tell me her story because she wants to get the word out to people who enjoy spending time outdoors to be aware of the threat of Lyme disease, especially now that warm weather is here.

So the next time you grab the rod, the hiking boots, or the bird-watching binoculars, keep an eye out for those sneaky little deer ticks.

They are no bigger than the head of a pin, but they can be a whole lot of trouble. Just ask Victoria.

Oh and if you'd like to support the fight against Lyme disease, Victoria is inviting everyone to take part in the first ever local Lyme Walk, which will be held June 7 at the Holding Point Park in Horseheads.

All net proceeds will support the Lyme Disease Association.

Preregistration ends this Friday, but you can also register the day of the event.

You can find out more about the Lyme Walk by going to www.lymewalk.org.

And read more about Victoria's frightening ordeal in my outdoor column this Sunday in the Star-Gazette.********************************

The head is smaller than a pin head. The tick can be seen but you reall don't feel it. Here in the South, I have had 100's of the critters bury their little heads into me. Some of them were removed with head still in me. I must be immune to the lyme because i don't even get a site reaction anymore.

I guess you are one of the lucky ones. I shudder just thinking about even one of those suckers attaching itself to me.
