We have used Frontline on our dog since she was a puppy but one Easter she still managed to get over 30 ticks at my in-laws house (woods and mil and fil have both have had lyme).

Afterwards I found out that Frontline works by killing the tick after it bites and has no abilities to repel them!!!

Since then we have added the Preventic Collar, still using Frontline for fleas and backup, but since then we have not found a single tick on our dog. It has been three years!!!

I highly recommend this product. Just want to share. Perhaps I should start wearing one!

Linda

Does it prevent fleas as well? We have our dogs on Sentinel and Frontline and are still seeing fleas.

In my mind, fleas are as bad as ticks.

We even got those new shots for our cats which last 6 months at a cost of approx $60 each. Seem to be working, but don't have them for dogs for some reason.

I am all for working hard now to prevent them from getting the upper hand. Once they get that, they are nearly impossible to get rid of. We have only see a few crawling ticks. Most I think blow out of the trees. Fleas seem to be more of a potential problem for us.

I am unable to treat the back yard right now as we temporarily have pigmy goats living out there waiting for a fence to be built around the field we had cleared next to our house for a horse. Don't know if goats are tick magnets or not, but haven't seen many at all on our property this year. Don't know if they have fleas or not, but probably.

Thanks for the tip...

Just some info, I strongly believe using one good product (advantix) is better than 2 products.

Brand Name
Preventic Collar (Virbac)

Generic Name
Amitraz 9%

What is the most important information I should know about Preventic Collar: Preventic Collar is a non prescription product for use on dogs. Preventic Collar contains a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) and should not be used on pets being given any other MAOI.

Use rubber gloves when putting the Preventic Collar on the pet. Do not use Preventic Collar on dogs less than 12 weeks of age. Humans taking MAOI medications such as Parnate, Nardil or selegiline or who are diabetic should use this product with caution and should wash hands thoroughly after applying the collar.

What is Preventic Collar: Preventic Collar, contains the monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), Amitraz, and is used to kill and detach ticks on dogs 12 weeks of age and older only. Preventic Collar is effective within 24 hours of application and the effects last for up to 3 months.

Preventic Collar is available in lengths of 18 inches for dogs up to 60 lbs, and 25 inches for dogs over 60 lbs.

What should I discuss with my veterinarian before applying Preventic Collar to my pet: Preventic Collar should not be used if the pet is taking another MAOI such as Anipryl, Selegiline, or meperidine. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is diabetic or has any other medical conditions. Tell your veterinarian if your pet is pregnant or lactating.

How should this product be used: Use this product exactly as directed on the package. If you do not understand the directions ask the pharmacist or veterinarian to explain them to you.

Apply the collar by placing around the dogs neck tightly enough that the collar is in contact with the dogs skin. Buckle the collar and trim off the excess. Remove the collar before bathing the pet and reapply when the pet is dry. Keep this product away from children and pets.

What happens if I miss giving a dose: Not applicable.

What happens if I overdose the pet: Seek emergency veterinary medical treatment. Symptoms of Preventic Collar overdose include incoordination, depression, high blood sugar levels, slow heart rate, decreased body temperature or death.

What should I avoid while using Preventic Collar \on my pet: Do not use Preventic Collar on dogs less than 12 weeks of age. Consult a veterinarian before using the Preventic Collar on debilitated, aged, medicated, pregnant or nursing animals. Do not use Preventic Collar on dogs using other MAOIs such as Anipryl, selegiline, tricyclic antidepressants such as clomipramine or Clomicalm, SSRIs such as fluoxetine. Humans taking MAOIs or who are diabetic should use caution applying the collar.

What are the possible side effects of Preventic Collar: If any of the following serious side effects occur, stop giving Preventic Collar and seek emergency veterinary medical attention; an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; swelling of the lips, tongue or face; hives). Remove the collar at the first sign of irritation or adverse reaction. Other side effects may also occur. Talk to your veterinarian about any side effect that seems unusual or bothersome to the animal.

What other drugs will affect Preventic Collar: Before giving Preventic Collar tell your veterinarian if your pet is also taking fluoxetine, clomipramine or meperidine or if your pet is using another MAOI. Talk to your veterinarian or pharmacist before giving any prescription or over the counter medicines.

Where can I get more information: Your pharmacist has additional information about Preventic Collar written for health professionals that you may read.

Amitraz does not contol fleas

http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=0&articleid=1376

Preventic collars for the prevention of tick infestations are available over the counter. They should be placed on the pet snug enough to allow 2 fingers to fit between the collar and the neck. Regularly monitor the tightness of the collar, especially in growing dogs. Amitraz collars do NOT control fleas.

The collar should be replaced every 4 months. Normal rainfall will not affect the collar, but remove it before bathing. Remove if any sign of irritation occurs. Do not handle the collar and do not allow children to handle or play with the collar. Do not use the collar on sick dogs
