My daughter is a counselor at a sleep away camp in upstate NY.

She told me today that they told the counselors that if a camper gets a tick on them not to panic and no need to rush to the nurse right away. It is not an emergency.

My daughter knows how this disease has destroyed a large part of my life. She is afraid to speak up though and wants me to do something. She also told me they remove the ticks with cotton balls.

I would like advice on how to really get the camp's attention with prompt and proper tick removal.

Anyone know where I can get a bunch of pamphlets or something that looks official? Somewhere to order tick removal kits in bulk?

Thanks for your help with this.

How about the LDA's great pamphlet for educators:

Tha ABC's of Lyme:

I used it to turn one very conservative teacher around.

Hopefully others will write in soon.

Here are 2 one-page handouts on how to remove a tick. One is from the Journal of the American Medical Association

JAMA

The other is from KidsHealth, sponsored by the nemours Foundation, well-respected for healthcare information:

KidsHealth

You can read tons on prevention at:

As far as tick removal kits, be prepared to spend about $8-10 for a good kit, less if you are just guying tweezers:

Hope that helps,

Thanks. I looked at all the links and will try to print pieces of it on good paper and give it to the camp. I am mostly looking for them to remove properly and notify the parents.

My daughter is very tick conscious - as you imagine growing up with a sick mom - and makes all her campers do daily tick checks. (I wish she would find other work but she has a passion for this camp.)

I also got a quick response from Turn the Corner and am going to try to work with them. I learned about them from the film Under Our Skin. They seem like a great organization.

Hello;

Never mind the pamphlets!

Get yourself a copy of the new Lyme disease film "Under our Skin", and send it to the camp head cheese!

Unless they are Nazis with no souls or demons lacking any ounce of humanity, they will see how dangerous vector borne diseases are!

Godspeed.
