I am beginning Mepron tonight for my 2 and 3 year old and am concerned about possible side effects and about stopping the Amoxicillin at the same time. They are both currently on Zithromax and Amoxicillin and since the prescription to treat the babesia is for Mepron and Zithromax I will stop the amoxicillin (though they did already have their morning dose). Does it matter if they have the Amox in their system from this morning?
Also, any side effects you've seen in young children? I don't want to wait until Monday since most likely it will end up being Monday night before the doc gets back to me and my little one is starting to have a verbal tic since yesterday which concerns me.
They have both been on meds since Oct 20th for the Lyme.
Also...do side effects usually happen early on or might it be in a week or two (I have plans to be out of town without the kids for three days next weekend). My doc said she never sees side effects in kids (except the occasional rash), but I thought I would put it out there all the same.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Beth

Hey rami...

Sorry to hear you have children needing such treatment.

May I suggest? And I am NOT a doctor- this is MY opinion only.

If it were my kids... knowing what I know now...

I would NOT start them on the Mepron today. Or tomorrow.

1. Starting a new medication on a weekend.. especially a HOLIDAY weekend... is a bit too iffy for me. If you have any problems or questions (like now)... no one is around to help with solid answers... and even the hospital staff is usually lower than normal.

2. Having given them the amoxy already today... unless your doc specifically said to give the Mepron with it.. I would hold back.

3. You have one child already having problems. If this were MY choice to make here... I'd stop the amoxy... and probably the zith too (it stays for weeks in your system after stopping it)... and take a break for the rest of the holiday weekend.

4. When in doubt.. take the safest route. There is no rush to give them Mepron. As I see it.. they've been without it their whole lives.. they can certainly wait 2 more days until you can check with the doctor.

5. Looking ahead to that weekend trip? Might want to not plan too heavily on going. If they herx like many adults do... you're likely to have a couple of really sick herxing kids about 3-5 days into the treatment. This herxing could last for several days or weeks.

Hopefully they won't have a bad herx... but just in case... you will need to take extra time and care with them.

Sorry I can't help more. Good luck!

PS... These are my opinions... and should not be a substitute for proper medical advise from your doctor.

FWIW, I agree with Tincup.

Best,
