Are There Any Famous or Important People with LYME Disease ???

How much time do you have?
Authors Amy Tan, Rebecca Wells, and Meg Cabot; singers Pete Seeger, Darryl Hall, Neneh Cherry, and Bill Chinnock; pro golfers Tim Simpson, "Lumpy" Herron, and Gary Player;
football player Wayne Sexton; baseball players Pete Harnish and Tom Seaver; supermodels Christy Turlington and Christy Brinkley; reporters Kathy Fowler, Brooke Landau, and Rob Kress;
actors Richard Gere, John Lurie, Carrie Nye, Irene McGee, Jamie Lynn Siegler, and Mary McDonnell;
governors George Pataki, Christie Todd Whitman, and Phil Bredesen; senator Chuck Schumer; and President George W. Bush.
And then there's all those who don't want to admit to having it, for fear of no one hiring them.

Well, according to the officials, he "had" Lyme and has just coincidentally developed Parkinson's.
Has anyone tried to educate the poor guy?

ask anyone in the lyme world and chances are they KNOW about TC!!!
AND I second the nomination for Miss TuTu also. we would be LOST without either one of them!!!

Back when I had no clue what was wrong with me, and had been told for 2 years by 8 doctors that Lyme wasn't a possibility....
I was watching a movie with John Lurie in it. He's a musician/composer also, besides being an actor.
I was wondering "what happened to that guy?", because I was a fan. I looked him up, and read an interview with him--he talked about Lyme and his struggle with it.
I read it and thought "my god, that's so close to my experience".
That's when I found and came to lymenet, and also got diagnosed.

Is there a way perhaps to collect all the names of these famous ppl and do a group contact type letter???
Within the letter we would include all the names of these famous ppl.
We could tell them we need them to all get together somehow and as a huge famous group(with us all backing them), make a public stink regarding Lyme Disease.
I knew a few of these ppl had Lyme because they are vocal. But, had no idea so many of these ppl had it.
There must be a way to let them all know they have this disease. I bet most of these famous ppl do not know that there are so many other famous ppl with it.

Well, if you think about it, despite their celebrity characteristics, famous people are in this sense a sample of the general population.
Seeing how many of them are infected (and there are probably many more than we know about or they even know about) is just a representation of how common and widespread this disease is.
I know Mary McDonnel gives really informative speeches on Chronic Lyme. They can be found on YouTube. Maybe others have as well that I'm not aware of.
It would be awesome if more celebrities would speak out. Of course they might be too sick to do so. I know Michael J. Fox would if he knew he still has Lyme.

news flash of a family i had NOT heard of having this and will post the source too!!!!
ROBERT KENNEDY, JR. FAMILY IN CONN. and/or other Kennedys!! ******************************
From Andy's blog:
UNDER OUR SKIN gallops through the West
December 10th, 2008 | Posted by: Andy
"Last week the Salt Lake Film Society screened UNDER OUR SKIN at the Leonardo Theater as part of its series on health films. The theater was filled to capacity, with many viewers attesting that Lyme disease is completely ignored and discounted in Utah.
One of the most satisfying results of the screening was that the film provided a venue for building not only awareness but also community.
After the screening and impassioned Q&A, I heard that several viewers joined to create a new Utah Lyme disease support group.
That the film is creating momentum on the grass roots level both to educate and create new alliances is very satisfying to us at Open Eye Pictures.
And we would love to hear about the ways in which this may be happening in your community. So be sure to check out the UOS guestbook and share your own experience.
The most challenging part of this Western tour, however, was waking up at 5AM in Park City for a 6:45AM TV interview on KSL TV in Salt Lake City.
Susan Swartz, one of the film's executive producers and an accomplished environmental artist, accompanied me at the interview, during which we surely woke-up other Utahans with alarming Lyme stories and statistics.
The next day, Susan invited me to attend a kick-off party for the Celebrity Ski Fest at Deer Valley Resort in Park City.
There I bumped into actor Matthew Modine who, upon hearing about our film, immediately shared his own perilous journey with Lyme, telling me: ``Lyme disease almost killed me.''
Then, later, I was introduced to Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who spearheaded the gala event to benefit the preservation of America's waterways.
A resident of Lyme-hot Cape Cod, he shared that his whole family had battled Lyme through the years, and so was well versed in Lyme.
I immediately put a DVD of UNDER OUR SKIN in his hands and told him that I was sure he would still find the film eye-opening and beyond the realm of what he thought he knew.
The following day I moved on to New Mexico where the film played to almost sold out crowds in two screenings at the Santa Fe Film Festival.
As had been the case in other film festivals, the festival organizers noted that UNDER OUR SKIN was one of the ``most popular films'' in the festival.
Perhaps my earlier interview on Santa Fe's public radio station KSFR helped fill seats.
A long Q&A followed the Saturday night screening and local Lyme activist Diane Marie remarked on how important it was that the film was brought to Santa Fe, where so many ``desert dwellers'' suffer in solitude: ``We were stunned at the interest in your well made, high power documentary.''
As I ended my trip under the quiet beauty of falling snow, I was struck by the ubiquity of this hidden disease that levels us all, from desert dwellers to celebrities and stars."

It is my understanding that Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with what constitutes as CDC+ with Lyme as a teen, living in Canada. Treated with standard 4-6 wks abx. Look at him now. And quite a few people have lobbied him to be retested for Bb w/Igenex, to no avail.
Famous - The recent case of Darrel Hall comes to mind. I know he supports Turn The Corner.
Didn't know that Mary Mcdonnell (sp?) had Lyme. Thought her cousin died of complications from Lyme.

Hi Betty,
I posted the info about the (Robert) Kennedys here on December 11th and got no response either.
Not surprising that the Kennedy family has been riddled with/by Lyme.
Too bad they haven't used their notariety (yet) to at least educate the public.

SORRY, i missed your earlier post; but it was during the 3 weeks of NO MONITOR for me and i missed many posts then going to library for 1-2 hrs. max!
yes, i agree; would be nice for them to speak PUBLICLY about their lyme; however, they can afford treatments out of pocket vs. average lymenet patient here.

i don't think it's right to list john travolta's son, jett, here at this point. thanks for understanding my view point.
NO autopsy is done yet; this is pure speculation, and my opinion ... NOT to be posted unless their is VALID, official info. that's my story, and i'm sticking to it.

but thats why i asked if it is or could be lyme related...
just seems yet another strange episode that noone knows about.

i was at the opening for the columbia lyme center in nyc, at which mary mcdonnell was the keynote speaker, and if i remember correctly i don't believe she has lyme disease. i think she's just an advocate (an excellent one) because the issue is important to her. it wouldn't surprise me if someone in her family is/was affected.

Not too long ago I spoke with a doctor that told me she has made an effort to contact Michael J Fox as she suspected he had lyme. No one was interested. From what I understood "they" believe he has Parkinsons disease and thats it. Now that could have changed but I doubt it. Too bad. I have an Aunt that has also been told she has Parkinson by docs at Georgetown. After a year of treatment and only getting worse they finally decided she didn't have Parkinsons but didn't know what was wrong. I keep telling her its the lyme. Perhaps one day soon she will hear me and find the right doctor. Its very sad to watch others suffer when the proper diagnosis would be a simple blood test of course through the CORRECT lab.
Did anyone mention Eddie Murphy? I heard he had lyme about 12 years ago.
