This is just unbelievable! My puppy started limping this week so I took her to the vet. He immediately suspected Lyme and just called with the blood results.
That's exactly what she has. I got her the immunization in January when I first brought her home and I put Frontline on her every month.
The vet said there are so many new strains out there it's impossible to protect against all of them.
I have a feeling she'll heal quickly without repurcussions. My other dog got it when she was a puppy ten years ago, but it was way worse. It came on hard and fast and we almost lost her.
I can't believe how prevalent this disease is.

I use frontline too, I think maybe I should switch to k9 advantix, someone said it works better than frontline in killing or repelling ticks. I have a pro treat my yard w/ granuals and a spray, but I worry about walks in the neighborhood. There are so many deer here, I have seen them in other peoples yard in the middle of the day.

Thank you so much tpap! I think she will be just fine. Her Lyme doesn't seem to be like mine.
I'll ask my vet about K9 advantix today when I go to get her abx. Thanks for mentioning it. I had no idea there was anything other than Frontline.

The vets I use always reccomend frontline, that's all they carry, they never tell me why, but petco has k9 advantix, they say that for ticks it's so much more affective. I think maybe the vets think k9 adv. is more toxic. so I am going to use k9 for the main tick months then use frontline the rest of the year.

I have 3 120-130 lb german shepperds a 4lb maltese and 3 cats so I can't take any chances on tick protection. Too scary.

Gosh, tpap, we both have seven pets! I have three dogs: a Keeshond, a Chow-Chow mix, and my puppy is an Australian Shepherd.
I have four cats: one senior and a mama and her two kittens that we adopted last summer.
The cats never, ever go outside and I prefer to keep my dogs in the house except for our daily walks, but the puppy just enjoys the back yard so much. I hate to not let her romp around back there, but I feel like you do....I can't take any chances.

Leelee, all those animals do make life interesting don't they!! I love seeing them all over the house and
they make me feel better when I have bad days and can't leave the house.
My dogs love the back yard, we put up a 6 ft. chain linked fence and have 2ft past the fence treated for ticks also.
We had a large deck built so they can lay there in the sun instead of in the grass.
My sweet kitties never go out, we have a maine coone, siamese mix and a savannah cat. I put
revolution on them every month b/c the maltese hangs out with them a lot and the savannah cat loves to snuggle up to te big dogs.

mtree, I don't know how accurate the tests are, I ask my vet to test them anytime they have any
sickness or lameness. I'm paranoid, but I couldn't imagine watching my dogs suffer, especially big dogs.

Some vets use the C 6 Peptide test as a "snap test" screen.
My vet actually wanted to do a Western Blot on my dog
That came up lame and with neurological issues two weeks ago.
I asked what lab does the doggie Western Blot and the response
Was a vet lab. Oh, that is reassuring.
I opted to go straight to treatment.
Especially since I have a supply of doxy on hand.
About 48 hours in, we started to notice a difference.
Every day it got a little better.
No ticks found on her during this episode.
She saw 3 doctors. One who has seen Lyme and others
Who just don't know enough about it.
Glad to say she is almost 100%.
This from a dog whose front right shoulder went bad,
Immediately followed by a left hind leg that just went out.
She curved and was ataxic (walked like she was drunk).
She slept all day and cried when you touched her.
Revolution is another medicine that I think may kill ticks too.
It also has heart worm medicine in it.
I think alternating Frontline and Advantix is best.
When kept on one or another for a while,
The fleas and ticks on my dogs seem to get immune to it.
I have 7 dogs. Five over the weight of 65lbs.
It gets very expensive to treat every two to three weeks.

he is 12 1/2...so we were thinking his leg/hip problem was due to getting old...nothings broken..dislocated....
...me having lyme you'd think I would have thought to test him....I have leg/hip problems... ...my poor pup..
when I brought him to the vet last weekend...we talked about a lyme test....
Geneal do you give your dogs regular doxy...??

My vet's office just called. They got the rest of my puppy's blood work back. She also tested positive for Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
I can't believe this. I feel like I am living in some bizarre universe.
The good news is that the Doxy she has for the Lyme is working already after just two doses. She's limping a lot less and the Doxy should work on the RMSF too.

Poor, poor puppy, I'm glad she's getting treatment, oh I hate the thought of my animals getting infected!

How much was a lyme test for your pup? My cat and my dog are both all of a sudden limping. I'm afraid to know!

I can't remember, exactly. I think it might have been about $200?
When the vet told me he suspected Lyme I couldn't believe it. I told him of course to do the test, but I asked for x-rays of her whole leg too because it seemed likely to me she hurt herself running around with my other dogs.
My whole bill was close to $500, but I think more than half of that was due to the x-rays.
The doxycycline I got for her was $25.20 for a one month supply.
My other dog had Lyme many years ago and we noticed her limping, but on her rear legs as opposed to my puppy's one front leg.

With all these pets limping around. I would ASK a good vet if there is ANY reason you could not use Tempo
off label in an old windex type sqeeze trigger bottle and spritz your cat or dog directly on there fur as a preventative and also a tick repellant.
It is so benign as its made from gerranium flowers. And even labeled for inside food processor buildings.
I dont know IF it would work but it would be darn cheap for such a use,,,mostly your TIME!!
I would think you could spritz them once a day and do a GREAT job. Dont see what it would hurt. there is ZERO smell!!
Anybody close enough to their vets to "ASK"??? Just thinkings of -just don-
