No matter how much I try I can't avoid a small snack bag of barbeque potato chips a day. They call to me sweetly like an enchanting siren perched upon the jagged rocks.

John,

Why did you have to mention potato chips! One of my downfalls. Kettle sea salt and black pepper...mmmmmm...they were on sale at Kroger a week and a half ago (buy one get one free). Bought 2 bags (they were the Big bags!) and had to go back mid week for more. But hey, I have 3 kids, I can blame it on them...except one of them hates that flavor.

That sounds sooooo good right now. I guess it's good that we don't have any more right now and hubby is gone with the car.

I may be the only one in the country who can "just eat one Lay's potato chips."

Never really liked chips .. and REALLY don't like the flavored ones.

And the salt blisters my mouth if I eat them.... so eating one a year is enough for me.

But sometimes I do like to put a couple chips on a bologna sandwich when I get the rare treat to eat one of those.

TC,

Have you ever tried the natural chips with sea salt (like Kettle brand)?

Yes, the conventional brands hurt my mouth too, not sure what it is, it's like acid or something, just burns.

the kettle kind though, mmmmmm!

There are a lot of BAKED chips now. Far better for the heart, blood vessels and liver. There are some nice baked black bean chips, too, and some blue corn ones that have higher fiber and more protein than potato chips.

I know there's a siren's call to chips from our past but any food with hot oil is most likely a trans fat and that can be very hard on our brain function as well as our hearts. The oxidation in our body from old, used oils, is really a hard process.

Trader Joe's has several kinds.

I've not read the label, but just googled and see that Lays even makes: Lays Baked Barbeque Chips.

HI Keebler,

Yup, there are still some companies using the trans fats, aren't they supposed to be banning them?

My mom would never use trans fats. I remember walking down the cereal aisle as a teen (in the 1990's) and trying to find cereal without hydrogenated oil, my best friend's dad complained to me that my best friend would no longer eat a lot of food at their house (whoops!).

The Kettle kind don't have hydrogenated oil either, but I'm sure even sunflower oil is healthier in a non-fried, raw form.

Good point though =)

Dear John S,
I can only eat Lay's Stax, because they are the only safe gluten-free ones around here. Lately, I have been eating a lot of corn tortilla chips and cheese dip. I need to improve my eating habits. Why are the chips so good? It is time to clean-up this processed food kick I have been on lately.

Sincerely,
Jin

I cannot but help but test fate and indulge. I have become less and less strict with the diet as time goes on. If I'm going to feel like hell I might as well feel good sometimes, but I worry I am pushing myself further down the proverbial slippery slope.

John,

I know it seems like indulgence but bad oils can really be the kiss of death for both your heart and your brain cells. Old, bad oils as, in many varieties of chips, will make it much harder to get better from lyme, maybe even impossible.

It's easy to compare labels and find a chip that is both pleasing to your taste buds, your cravings - and your arteries. If you call your best supermarket, I'm sure they will arrange a taste test for you so that you can sample all of their healthful chip choices.

You can also find out the date of manufacturer. Fresh is best. Short distances of travel, too.

Hmmm these say servings per container 2
Saturated fat daily value 8%, so thats 16%, can't be good.

Don't you love how they play that trick and make a small snack bag 2 servings. Like anyone is going to just eat half the bag.

The reason BAKED chips are better is that while the fresher, better oils are better than hydrogenated ones, ANYTIME an oil gets over a certain temperature it becomes toxic.

So, to hedge your bets, unless you cook it yourself and know that oil has not gotten too hot, it's best to avoid.

I don't know the temperature required to fry chips. I had tour of a potato chip plant once and they do heat the same oil, over and over and it gets very hot.

Now, I have read that if one ingests "bad" oil that if they take fish oil or krill oil at that same time, it can help to prevent that bad oil's oxidation from hurting our cells.

I don't have the citation to back that up but I do recall having read that about a year ago. I cannot balance a checkbook or even recite my address when asked but, somehow, I have a memory for certain passages that I read.

Black Bean chips are also very good. If one wanted, they could add B-B-Q spices, etc. that way they'd know the quality of the ingredients.

We find lots of healthy snacks at Trader Joe's. My downfall is dark chocolate. They have wonderful small bars that are very inexpensive. I try to eat only a few small blocks of one each night....that is my indulgence.

My main food is a protein shake made with TJ's powder, plain yogurt, frozen strawberries and a little orange juice. That holds me most of the day.

We eat a light dinner at night with fresh fruit for dessert.

In spite of this routine for the past year or two, I fail to lose weight. My husband does all the shopping and cooking, I have absolutely no appetite and am usually nauseous.

My LLMD said that my metabolism got screwed up when they removed my thyroid.

I hope that when I am more recovered and can move more I will lose weight. We also hope that my new thyroid meds will help.

I'm glad I don't have a chip fetish! [Smile]

I had the Kettle's sea salt and black pepper chips on my desk and was ignoring them--now I have to have some, darn it. [Smile]

I don't usually crave chips that much--though those are hard to stop eating once I start--, but they sometimes relieve my nausea, so I started eating them lately. Only now I have a med that is helping the nausea, so I don't have that excuse for chips any more.

I think I will eat some anyway. Life is short in any case, and I already gave up everything else good.

I love chips too! Although I'm concerned about the high oil cooking, a small bag once in awhile I can live with. However, I try to eat only organic. Commercially grown potatoes are full of pesticides, etc. I don't want to eat.
