I've never heard of Astragalus being used externally, in this manner - or maybe I read it and forgot. Do you have a link or remember where you read that, as I'd like to learn more?
I did a quick little search and came up on with this for pets - some pretty nice stuff here:

You misunderstand. According to other sources, if you take Astralagus it repels the ticks so that won't embed in your skin. That's what I am looking for. Buhner recommends it but says nothing about what source he prefers & that's what I am looking for. That & a dosage.
