"Bob Dole" posts on Lyme Friends. He's been placed into a mental health facility by the court. He's in northeast Indiana.

He has Lyme, pain problems, and food intolerances. They aren't allowing his prescribed pain meds and aren't following his diet restrictions.

He has one nurse whose husband has Lyme disease.

I don't think he has any supportive family or any patient advocate.

Here's a link to the updates from Bob:
http://www.lymefriends.com/forum/topics/thread-for-updating-on-bob

Here's Bob's webpage on LymeFriends:

I imagine events like this happen frequently to those who are quite ill and have no voice.

You can't read these without joining Lymefriends. You can't join Lymefriends without answering a lot of questions. Any chance you can cut and paste the info here for us to see?

Oh no. Not another one!

Poor dear!

This should NOT be happening.

Especially on INDEPENDENCE DAY!

*&^%%#*@)$

I also can't see the posts you mentioned as I am not a member at Friends, so as jb said, is it possible to share his information here?

We could use a small team of volunteers to help with this project.

If WE don't help each other, who will help us when we are in need?

Any volunteers? Please?

Let's not expose any more of our friends and family to this abuse!!!

And thanks h...

Your kindness is over flowing, as usual.

And your commitment to help others is commendable.

Bless your heart.

Hi there!

I have never posted here before but Im very active on LF.

Ive been communicating with Bob Dole.

Bob is in a 30 day cognitive-behavioral therapy program for some psychiatric diagnoses he has received.

Some of his psychological problems may be due to Lyme disease, but it seems that he may be suffering from some problems that are independent of Lyme.

Either way, this program will hopefully help him to cope better with some of these problems. He believes the therapy will be helpful and is therefore willing to do the program.

Bob lives in Northeastern Indiana. There are not many, if any, doctors that know much of anything about Lyme.

Unfortunately, the doctors in the area have dismissed Lyme as a possibility and have diagnosed him with somatoform disorder.

But this is NOT his primary psyche diagnosis and NOT the main reason he has been put in the therapy program.

So, dont worry, they are not going to spend the next 30 days trying to convince him that hes not sick. Itś not the focus of this type of therapy.

Once he leaves the program, he will be able to resume seeking care for his Lyme.

Thankfully, it is looking very promising that he will soon receive disability benefits, including back pay, and this will hopefully give him enough money to pay for seeing a knowledgeable doctor and getting proper treatment.

I posted my two main concerns for him over on LF. One is that he is not allowed to continue taking his pain meds while in the home because they are narcotics. The other is that he is intolerant to several foods and he doesnt have much control over his diet at the moment.

He is planning to see his family doctor soon, so hopefully that doctor will be able to resolve the pain med problem or put him on something like Lyrica or neurotonin to help with the nerve pain. I had him write down a list of drugs that Lymies often use for pain that arent controlled substances.

So that leaves the food as my biggest concern.

Right now, I am planning to find out if he is allowed to receive a few care packages from us. We could send him some snacks that he is able to tolerate. I will ask him about that the next time we speak.

****Jarla, what does he say he needs?*****

I dont think he really knows yet if or how he needs help from us.

When we spoke he was still getting a feel for the place and the people running it. Letś see first if his family doctor is at least able to do something for his pain. That by far was his biggest complaint.

He really appreciates knowing that people care about him and are supporting him. So definitely prayers.

And I will gladly pass along to him any messages you would like to send.

Oh! I should also add that I will definitely let Bob know the next time that we talk that there are people ready and willing to help and advocate for him if he ever needs anything.

I know he will really appreciate the support. :-)

Lymies do such a great job of watching out for each other!

Tincup is right. Too often we don't have anyone else.

Hmmmmm???????????

Seems to be at least two problems I can see just from the postings and info I was sent.

1. They are dismissing him as a hypochrondiac. If someone has Lyme and/or coinfections they need to be taken seriously and be treated for the infections. This is similar to the Munchauser's problem we keep seeing and it is getting worse.

2. The $$ he expects to get on disability and he is counting on MAY be reassigned to the place where he is staying to pay for his stay. This happens quite often... and the patients aren't told up front about it.

If he does not want help and/or wants to be there, which it seems he has indicated, there isn't much anyone can do.

I am VERY concerned about this situation, but I don't have all of the details and he doesn't seem to mind going through this.

If the situation changes and he requires help, please let me know.

Otherwise please tell him we do care and hope he is doing better soon.

Thank J for taking care of his food situation, the communications and sharing and anything else you can do to help him. He needs a friend. You are good to step up to the plate and help him.

Thanks H for bringing this up. I think you are right to be concerned... and I am still concerned. If you hear more about it or there is anything he needs as far as getting out... please do keep us informed.
