those of you who know me know i have been looking for almost a year. it was a long cold snowey winter here so i didn't do much but shovel for 6 months...but i found her today.

she is perfect for me. i don't know whose butt is wider...but , like i said sh'es perfect.

Miss American Pie is her name...a 7 yr old 15.2 hand spotted draft mare. very quiet. but not dead. out of shape recovering from leg wound-but sound -so we can get in shape together.

i can't believe i mounted with so little trouble.
and she is one mile from the house in a great barn with a new indoor....i am soooooooooo happy!

my goal was to get on. i told myself it was ok if i didn't . i could bring the special mounting block the next time. but i did get on-with only a little help. and it felt so good-great jog and trot...and i cantered two strides!!!!! i can't believe it. i havene't ridden since last august. and only rode 2 months since i had my knees done...well only two months in the last 7 yrs i think.

yea! me! thank you jesus!!!

melody...yes "that feeling"-that happy, contented feeling i only get while riding is a big reason why i did it. i turned 60. i got some scarey test results back. i've been fighting this creepy disease since 84. i know it is time to get some "good feelings" into my life on a regular basis-no matter what it costs.

i think it will be as good therapy as most of the supps i take

i started riding at 3yrs, bought my own horse at 7(for a dollar), paid for his food by giving pony rides on him, was teaching and training at 14 and have taught hundreds of kids to ride. i counted up i must have trained about 50 horses in my life.

in 98 when i started tx i herxed so bad i had to break up the farm. i really didn't think i could do it. i was able to give three of my favorite horses to barns where i can see them...but it was one of the hardest things i did in my life.

last year-after bilateral knee surgery-FOUR MONTHS AFTER!- i started riding but only made it to sept cuz winter was coming and it was too hard to get to barn.

now i am in a better situation-close to barn with lots of flat land-no hills and muddy paddocks to deal with...

SO I AM REALLY HAPPY!!!!!!

Wow, what good news! I am a animal lover too. We have three dogs and a horse.

We also board our horse about a mile from us. I've only ridden him about 5 times, but it was great!! I'm going to try to ride a few times yet this summer.

I groom him all the time though. Which is very therapeutic for me.

Congrats on the pony lease!! How exciting!

Horses have always been in my life as well. We have 10 right now. They are soooo good for the spirit.

If I can do nothing else, my hubby will open the blinds in our bedroom and I am able to watch them graze in the front pasture.

May seem like a small thing, but it's very good therapy for me:)

The last few months I have made such progress in healing, I have have the chance to ride a bit.

Hurts like hades, but is so good for my soul!

Enjoy your moments with your new horse!

My horses were the drive that made me so determined to get well. I just had to get back the ability to ride.

By God's grace, I am there and I understand fully the joy riding brings. I too believe it is good medicine. Just being happy brings so many good chemicals to our body and those chemicals are healing.

Really neat that you are both recovering from illness and that she is so close to you and you have an indoor area to ride (I think that is what you were saying). I know that must be very important during the winter months.

Leadmare, I am laughing at your handle. Where I board my 3 horses, there is 1 mare (mine) 1 yearling filly (mine) and 3 geldings, one of which is mine. After I rode my gelding this morning, I noticed everyone was hanging out at the run-in shed as the heat is beginning to hit.

The run-in shed has a small stall and a large run-in area. My mare (leadmare and only adult mare) was standing in that big run-in shed all by herself. Comfy and cozy while the 3 geldings and my little filly were all trying to cram into the very small stall. Talk about "leadmare" attitude! I could have killed her but that is just the nature of horses.

LP, please post a pic of your new horse.

i have done so many things like that during my recovery. can't plant flowers any more...but can look at and smell them...sometines even get out and cut them myself.

can't surf anymore -but i park by the ocean and watch it and smell it and just feel it

then i started kayaking quiet water-when i couldn't walk for exercise

my whole life sinc dx has been about adapting and modifying and not giving up.

THAT IS WHAT WE ALL HAVE TO DO...in our own way.

i have ridden her twice-an hour each time. walk and trot. we have both improves in such a short time.

i have pics-i'm not sure if i know how to post them here. i'm embarrassed-cuz in one of them my butt looks twice as big as hers...and shes 1/2 percheron!!! but one pic makes it look like we are about equal. you know you are adapting and modifying your thoughts when you are happy your butt is the same size a draft horse!

she's only 15.2 and she doesn't even seem to think i am more than a fly on her back. ahhhhh. i don't have to feel guilty.

luvs and mare-if you pm me your regular email i know i can forward pics. i have to figure out how to put them on here. i'm not very good at it

PLEASE forgive my panic...BUT...I was outdoors for 10 min. max, holding on to the reigns of a horse and picked up two lime positive ticks in MO.

It's imperative that you use extreme caution anywhere near a horse, because they attract deer ticks like crazy.

Have fun, but my Lord! PLEASE be careful, K? [group hug]

Curious as to what kind of tick repellent gets applied to horses.

Re TKO Orange (www.TKOOrange.com) - it can be applied to dogs and cats. I wonder if it could be rubbed/misted on horses.

It's from oranges, has d'limonene in it. A couple drops in a spray bottle, and fill up with water. Or Orange Guard is the diluted stuff.
