I have not been dx with Lyme disease, actually my Dr. said I didn't have it because my test was neg. However I have had symptoms that point to Lyme for 5 weeks now and I did have band 41 present in my test. I currently do NOT have insurance, but my husband and I have been thinking that now is the time to get it, before I have a dx. My prem. would be $800 a month, because I would go ahead and insur my 5 kids as well ( 2 of them have been running low grade fevers for over a week now, so I'm getting a little concerned). My question is, would it be worth it to have insurance? The llmd I have an apt. with in Oct. doesn't even accept insurance. Will it pay for my meds, and other test? Can anyone with or without insurance tell me a little about your experience? My mind is going crazy, esp. since I don't even know if I have Lyme or not, and then there is the question do I simply wait until my apt. in Oct to do anything, or should I go to another Dr. just to "by time"... I'm so confused!!! and then there is my kids!! And on top of all of that we live in North Carolina where Lyme isn't even suppose to exsist! Help me please.

My LLMD doesn't accept my insurance either, but it did cover my recent IV treatment, blood work, and the Zithro I take a month says it is $851 per month, and I get it for $7.....so, to me, it is worth it.

All insurance policies are different.

My LLMD does not take insurance but he gives a receipt that can be sent in to insurance.

In my case, my Highmark policy does not cover office visits, medications, etc, so it hasn't helped much at all with my lyme treatment.

It paid a small amount of my labwork at various times.

It depends on what the policy covers.

Is there a program in your state where your kids can get coverage depending on income?

You are right about it being easier to get a policy without a diagnosis.

Once you have a diagnosis, you must disclose it if applying for insurance, I think.

Brandi, I dont know what your financial circumstances are but take a look at NC Healthchoice for the childrens insurance.......its an assistance programme so no child is without health insurance........then you would just have to get yours.........

My insurance does not cover my LLMD, nor the travel or the many supplements I take.

It saves me lots on oral antibiotics, and blood tests from Quest. If the blood tests go anywhere else, I have to pay for them.

I don't think it saves me $800 a month, though. It is some protection in case I should need ER or hospital admission, for Lyme complications or an accident. Those can cost many thousands at once.

On the other hand, I just had something very minor done at the hospital, and when I told them my insurance wouldn't cover it and I would like to pay up front, they gave me a 50% discount for self-pay. Last time they charged me double and sent it to my insurance, which did not reimburse me but counted it toward my astronomical out-of-network deductible which I will never reach.

Also find out about pre-existing conditions and waiting periods before you commit to paying that much. You would hate to find out that they already considered you to have a pre-existing condition and wouldn't cover it for a year, AFTER you start paying them all that money.

Just ask them what constitutes a pre-existing condition and what their policy is about that; don't volunteer that you might have one.

Don't lie on any forms, though--they can cancel your whole policy if they find out you did that.

But you can legitimately say you don't have it if your doctor insists that you don't.
