Did you know?

Americans throw away 2.5 million plastic bottle caps every hour.

And it has always "bugged" me to not have a way to recycle those plastic bottle caps. Guess what? They now have a way to take old bottle caps and make them into new ones!

You can now recycle caps that twist on with a threaded neck such as caps on shampoo, water, soda, milk and other beverage bottles and **pharmaceutical lids**..

And flip top caps on tubes and food product bottles (such as ketchup and mayonnaise), laundry detergents and some jar lids such as peanut butter!

How exciting! We CAN save the world.. one cap at a time!

Thanks Tincup! I would like to see the growing Texas-size island of plastic, floating in the Pacific get smaller because people are recycling more!!!

Good to donate to a cause!!!

We use our old med bottles for change. Big ones for quarters or nickels and the tall skinny ones for dimes. Pennies go into old coffee cans.

I was hoping you'd see this Siz... as you are fantastic in your ways to give back to the earth. I love it!

[group hug]

My kid once asked that I save the caps for him, as some had "points" (Coke or some other product) associated with it. He would get movie tickets with his points, which he enjoyed.

Ever since, for years, I have been collecting them and teasing him each holiday/birthday, etc with the caps .. by wrapping them up and giving them as a joke gift.

He kept telling me- thanks Mom but we don't save them anymore- the special offer was over (several years ago). I guess he thought I kept forgetting.

But to not hurt my feelings he had saved them all. I can't believe he did that... but ok.

So when I presented him with his latest gifts, he got another batch of caps... and then he told me about the cap recycling.. and asked if he could donate the ones I had given him for the charity.... IF I wouldn't mind.

I had to laugh when I realized he had actually saved them all! He wasn't real familiar with the program... just knew a local charity was collecting them, so I looked it up and found the info above.

Hey TX,

That is a nifty idea too! I use some of mine for fish hooks and sharp items. But otherwise had not come up with a good use for them. I'll use that idea you have! Thanks!

Thanks for the info!

It has always bothered me to have to throw the caps out into the regular garbage.

I have tried to reuse them as much as I can, but they're really not all that useful (that I can see).

I'm bringing this information to my children's schools for their Open House/PTA meetings. I've already sent a link to the School District PTA.

This is good timing!

I recently learned that recycling is different from city to city. Where i used to live, they would only recylce a few items, like milk jugs and soda cans.

The new city I live in recycles almost everything, including caps. A very nice program here.
