My son and I are leaving soon to fly to San Francisco for my son's first LLMD appt. We were blessed with hotel points so that cost is covered. The LLMD's office is a few blocks away, so we will be walking this trip. Though we are staying at The Westin St. Francis on Union Square, we certainly cannot afford the restaurants in that area. There must be some places we could go inexpensively that are within a few blocks walking trip from the hotel? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I would think a hotel concierge could help with that.
Or AAA book on CA. They have restaurant listings and ratings w/ price catagories.
Even the girls at the LLMD's front desk could give some tips.
Just ideas in case no one here knows...

thanks all! Great ideas and though I am happy SF won their 1st World Series in decades, I am grateful our appt is not until NEXT week!

- I hope your journey goes well. Long ago, right after arriving at my first job out of college, I was sent to attend a workshop at the St. Francis Hotel - but our lodging was way out at a Howard Johnson's in Redwood City. Even just for the meetings, I enjoyed the St. Francis' atmosphere.
Looking up photos to spark my memory, I delight in the attention to a:
"Sensory Welcome - Experience an arrival like no other, with soothing music, soft custom lighting, a refreshing signature scent, and unique botanical designs."
Ahhhh. Enjoy all that is possible. Even if health matters are the driving factor, you and your son will surely have some good memories from this,
I would like to design grocery stores to have that kind of sensory experience. -

I was looking for gluten free restaurants, not inexpensive, so I don't have any personal recommendations, but I was happy with what I found through that website.

- I have found that it helps to call at least a little bit in advance if I'm going to need a gluten free meal. That gives them a head's up, a little time to think about it - and I was usually treated like an honored visitor.
After my telling them at one place, I had started to order something that had a trace of wheat and the waiter, very firmly but kindly, said, "oh, no, we can't let you do that!" He then offered a great alternative.
The websites are so handy to plan in advance, too. If you or your son has sound sensitivities, you may do well to call in advance and ask about their music system and how to request adjustments if needed. Sometimes that works, sometimes, not. -

LOL - Yes, good timing, texanmom! I think we just had our largest downtown gathering ever!! I'm guessing around half a million!! No room on trains, buses, ferries, freeways!! Maybe some places in town will still be decorated in orange and black!
We have all levels of dining here, from the posh to the cheap, and all kinds of nationalities. If you take a stroll around in any direction for a couple blocks, you'll see many menu options.
There's hofbrau at Lefty O'Doule's, a couple Lori's diners, several pizza/salad places. I like Sear's with its scrumptious little pancakes...
For a view overlooking Union Square, it's fun to go to the Cheesecake Factory at the top of Macy's, and yes, they do have a regular dining menu too.
Lots of smorgasborg options at the Westfield mall at Market and 5th, in the basement level. Also the world's best chocolate at Cocabella's on the first floor!
