I was treated for Lyme in 1992 after a tick bite w/ rash and neck & shoulder pain that was quickly getting worse. I was fortunate that the first doctor that I went to summed up the situation and acted quickly to prescribed a month of abx. The symptoms stopped progressing but the neck and shoulder pain took almost 10 years to subside.
19 years later I'm fighting it again, maybe it resurfaced maybe it was a new exposure.
If symptoms can last long after the disease is knocked out how do you ever know when to stop treatment?

I subscribe to the Burrascano lyme treatment protocol that says to treat the patient for 2 months past the point at which they are symptom free.

My doctor did that for me and it has been 6 years since I completed my treatment and I am still symptom free, enjoying my life.

The Burrascano Lyme Treatment Guidelines are found here:

http://www.ilads.org/lyme_disease/B_guidelines_12_17_08.pdf

See pages 19-20. Your case of lyme in 1992 would be classified as "early disseminated" since you had constitutional symptoms (neck and shoulder pain).

For that, Burrascano says 4 to 6 months of treatment is typical.

So, if you agree with Burrascano, it is easy to know when to stop treatment.

Burrascano is the foremost lyme disease pioneer in the world and, when he was practicing medicine, had people from all over the world come to be treated by him. He had a high cure rate and that is what made him famous.

He wrote his Treatment Guidelines for doctors to follow, and many doctors all over the world follow them.

Why not find a lyme doctor who follows Burrascano this time around. It's never too late.

I stopped when I felt that most of my symptoms were gone. I had had this for 42 yrs when I got dxd so I knew I'd have some residual effects.

It was a good choice because after going off the abx I just started feeling better and better. That was 6 1/2 yrs ago.

One thing I did before going off meds was take heavy doses of flagyl. My LLMD had a protocol for it. If THAT doesnt' bring out the keets, nothing will!!! Since I didnt' react, we knew I was in the clear.

Another thing I did was make sure I had no yeast/candida problems. So you need to do the diet and maybe take Diflucan to clear it all out.

You won't know if your symptoms are from Lyme or from candida if you don't do that. The symptoms are VERY similar.
