My dear friend's otherwise healthy 5 year old daughter says that it hurts for her to swallow. She hasn't eaten solid food in 4 weeks. She agrees to drink Ensure and eat yogurt and pudding. This began suddenly with no other illness. The pediatrician has tested for Strep and also done a tiny scope up the nose to look scope down the throat. The next test scheduled is a Barium test with x-rays.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this might be or where to begin looking for what it is?

Thank you!

I can't possibly diagnose, but will suggest the "unusual" things that I can think up.

Yeast? An overgrowth can cause your throat to hurt.

Did she fall? Run into an object? Perhaps pinch nerves in her neck? A chiropractor might help if that is a possibility.

Allergies? Mold, pets, etc.?

Reflux- GERD?

Parvo B-19 virus?

Air conditioning/dryness of air?

Strained muscles from bouncing around, laughing or yelling?

Whatever it is, I do hope the little one will be feeling better soon. You are a good friend to try to help her out.

When my neck vertebrae are out, it's hard to swallow - so maybe to check with a good chiropractor?

Thank you, both. I'm going to mention the neck vertebrae and a chiropractor because the child's mother sees a chiropractor for shoulder pain. Also, I think seeing an allergist is a great idea. The child has had severe seasonal allergies since she was a few months old.

I knew I'd get some great ideas from this board!

My daughter has lyme disease.

this is one of her main symptoms!

It has gotten a lot better with treatment.

I also put a little grapefruit seed extract on

q-tip for her to suck on like a sucker. This

has helped a lot.

I used to take her to the chiropractor and that never helped the swallowing problem.

of course, she might just have strep throat, which I bet the grapefruit seed extract will help.

I do this once or twice per day. My throat gets bad too, and once a month I lose my voice. I think it is partly lyme disease and partly yeast infection.

I am not a doctor. I have no clue.

I cannot say for sure either, and I hate to go directly to TBI's, but, when you said "hurts to swallow", what came from my own experience was Bartonella.

When I was infected, my throat hurt for months. Some days were less painful then others, but most days it felt like I was swallowing nails. Ya know, at the height of your worst cold infection with the painful red throat.

I became so bitter because I was reliving that kind of pain everyday and I couldn't take it anymore.

Never experienced something like that, hope I don't ever again.

Hope you find your answers-

I had a salivary gland infection and it was very painful to swallow. The pain was under my tongue from the middle to the back of my mouth.
