I have been struggling to quit smoking for a while now. I know it is soooo important for my health.

I am curious if anyone else has tried or knows anything about electronic cigarettes. I wonder if they are a healthier alternative.

I want to stop smoking sooo bad but it is very hard and they are so addictive! If anyone has experience with this or any advice that would be great!

My significant other tried switching to an electronic cigarette. What ended up happening is that he ended up smoking BOTH - eek! He said that the electronic cigarette has nicotine, but it's missing the other things you're addicted to. So, he was never able to switch permanently. You might have better luck, though.

Oh, and don't suck too hard on them (like you do with a normal cigarette) or else the fluid will spray into your throat and make it burn. He learned that the hard way. There were quite a few times where he would forget and, out of habit, take a drag and then start coughing and have his eyes water for a while.

In addition to Laura's recommendation, The Easy Way to Quit Smoking by Alan Carr . . .

Acupuncture &/or hypnosis have been good tools for some others' successes.

A good acupuncturist (L.Ac.) or an ND / L.Ac. (N.D. is a naturopathic doctor. Some are also L.Ac.) can also offer specific nutritional formulas and techniques to help.

There are some herbs that decrease the desire, calm anxiety and gently support alertness -- others that help with the detox part of this.

Tai Chi or Qi Gong are gentle but powerful exercise routines, too.

The very best of luck as you become a breather of only fresh, clean air.

My concern with the electronic contraption is that a lot of chemical exposure could have long lasting and serious effects - and others should not be exposed to those chemicals, either, so it would need to be done outdoors only.

To make it easier for you:
---------------------------------

As suggested by LauraLyme:

http://www.theeasywaytostopsmoking.com/

Allen Carr's EASY WAY to Stop Smoking website

-------------------

http://www.amazon.com/Easy-Way-Stop-Smoking-Non-smokers/dp/1402771630/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319397263&sr=1-1-spell

BOOK, through Amazon, is just $9.00 and qualifies for free shipping with a $25. purchase.

842 customer reviews: A solid 5 star, top rating.

The reader reviews might offer some encouragement.

(While most are likely not lyme literate or ILADS-educated, if you can find one who is, that would be a bonus. If not, however - just for smoking cessation & support - ask if this is an area in which they can help. Some may have more experience than others regarding smoking cessation.)

-----------------

For either Qi Gong and Tai Chi, be sure it is a HEALING form. Talk to the instructor first.

Some forms focus more on the historical militaristic martial arts styles. I made that mistake once of showing up for the wrong Tai Chi class. Yikes !
