GOOD NEWS for us all! Punxsutawny Phil failed to see any ticks on himself today, so that means that we won't get bitten for the next 6 weeks, as long as we take every precaution!
Other things that were said on the net today about Phil's other job, weather-forecasting:
"BREAKING: A terrifying shadow: 6 more weeks of winter!" No complaining. We haven't even had winter yet.
Doesn't he mean 6 more weeks of summer?
What a dumb groundhog. It will be 64 in MO today. Somebody please fire him.
Shock and horror as the world learns a giant rodent can only correctly predict weather 39& of the time. (Maybe a female version of Phil could be called Elisa?)
Like my grandma used to say, "If he sees his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter. If not, it will be a month and a half."
The groundhog in my back field did not come out today to predict the weather. He knows I'll shoot him.
Happy Candlemas and Imbolc's Day (means ewe's milk)

Well that's good news for Phil and us too!
BTW, my son and some of his friends camped overnight in Punxsutawny last night and were there when Phil saw his shadow this morning.
He said it was awesome...lol!
They have quite a celebration there on Groundhog day.

Ha - I wanted to do something about the tick problem so I acquired a bird to get rid of them - there's a lot of them -
the bird definitely has OCD - its official name is OCcupieD, its nickname is OccuPeck.

I compared their celebration to the ball dropping in NY to my coworkers yesterday, it seems to be their ball dropping anyway. I'm about from as far north and as far east as you can go so I just know what I used to see on local news every year.
Edit - Does anyone actually know what this will mean for the insect population this year? I heard that they will be horrible due to the mild weather letting them do their thing longer. On the other hand I heard that the warmer weather lets the ticks mess with the animals longer so they won't be as aggressive to attach to humans. Both concepts have some logic, but does anyone really know?

Robin,
Can I borrow your OCD bird today? I could get done hanging drywall IF I could retrain him to run the screwgun instead of the tick pecking.
Then he could regress to his former 'position'
We need a 'midwestern' Phil. Our 60 degree weather goes out the window today with an all out blizzard breathing down our necks.
6 to 10 inches of that stuff they call,,,oh yeah they call it 'snow',,,what ever that is.

Robin,
I didn't have a chance to really talk with my son about his whole groundhog day experience yet, so I don't have any inside info to share.
I do know that the bars and restaurants are very full the night before...and this is a usually small and quiet town.
I saw some pics of him and his friends having a few drinks, and a pic of him standing in front of a what we call a tent camper...the kind of camper that has the tent-like walls that pull out that turn into beds.
It must have been fun for my son to say it was awesome.

Just Don, so I'm supposed to loan out OccuScrew? This bird has a lot of talents...
Dek, I heard there were fireworks and cheerleaders? Are we talking like a PA style warm-up for the big game?
Here, we're about to be invaded by a thousand dragons, come the Chinese New Year's Day parade soon for the Year of the Dragon, and it's already starting -
very fancy dragons popping up everywhere all over town, even a large beautiful riveting one at the back of City Hall -
Thx, what a Surprise compliment! We could rock on a little longer here, if you'd like - everyone can add a line to this:
There once was a groundhog named Phil, Who

There once was a groundhog named Phil Who stayed in his hole very still. Since it was not cold, His prediction wouldn't hold, So he might as well stay in and chill.

- Our local meteorologist said it won't make much difference on the insect (or tick) population .. they will just come out earlier.
I would say all the "experts" are just giving educated guesses.
