A. Synopsis: SB210 establishes the Lyme and Related Tick-Borne Disease Education, Prevention, and Treatment Act, and creates a task force. B. Summary: SB210 states: * These diseases are caused primarily by ticks * In 2009, 5,722 cases were reported in PA * Lyme disease is most prevalent in South East PA * Early diagnosis is imperative * Untreated Lyme is a great threat to health * Some people may have signs or symptoms for months or years This legislation will: * Provide the public with information on the disease through an educational task force and educate physicians, insurers, and government agencies on the different treatment options * Allow a physician to prescribe short- or long-term antibiotics without negative repercussion if the treatment is not effective * Mandate insurance reimbursement be provided for any type of treatment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It also strikes Section 7 relating to a licensee's right to diagnose and treat Lyme Disease without any negative repercussion should the treatment fail. The bill as written would not place disciplinary action on a physician if the treatment failed. This amendment removes that protection. The amendment also changes the phrase ``multiple standards of care'' to read ``treatment options.'' A08991 adds veterinarians and a school nurse to the task force. It also removes the term ``Chronic Lyme Disease'' as this is not a recognized term by the medical community.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I see this as a good start. Also by removing cronic & leaving it just lyme allows early treatment. If I'm reading it right.

Maybe it's just me, but this seems like a fairly worthless piece of legislation.
I don't see how this benefits us at all.
If I'm reading this right, it just creates an education task force. Does nothing for those with Chronic Lyme.

I think they removed the cronic for a good reason to cover anyone with lyme.
But everytime I re-read it the whole thing, I'm left scratching my head.

It didn't start out "worthless". It started out as excellent. It's been amended over and over for 3 years now.
Senators have been heard to say, "This will never pass as long as I'm around. Insurance companies can't afford it." This is what we're dealing with.
It was realized a while back that we can't afford all or nothing, we need to get our foot in the door, and so the amendments...

And how would they know unless the insurance companies weren't in their back pocket.
I'm still confused what this does for us. Seems like "nothing" to me.
Not giving anyone a hard time, but it just seems they passed legislation that does nothing but protect the insurance companies.

I think we need to know which senators say things like "This will never pass as long as I'm around. Insurance companies can't afford it."
We all need to let them know they work for us, not the insurance companies. We vote them in, we can vote them out.

Well, acknowledging lyme is a problem is good.
Educating schools, school nurses, nurses, parents, kids, landscapers, hunters, fishermen, etc. that ticks are a problem, lyme is real, here are the signs, all that stuff is important.
I believe the reason insurance companies are more important than the constituents the senators serve is because not that many constituents have been heard or seen.
We need to put the pressure on in force. 500 or 100 or 500 people in the whole of PA is not enough (apparently).
So raise awareness, raise knowledge and more people will start to raise their voices.
Like I said, it's a start.
Of course it means that any direct benefit to us (safe doctors, more insurance responsibility) will take more time.
