i am still sore with this diverticulitis crap. i have the appt with this surgeon guy for a consult on january 11th, friday. oh great.
but we're supposed to leave for a trip to belieze on saturday morning. it's already paid for and you can't get a refund. cruises don't work that way.
my gastro said get the abx refilled and go, but i can't help being scared to death.
i imagine ruptures, abscesses, bleeding, you name it, i imagine it.
now husband says "i don't understand, you go on a cruise and eat whatever you want and have no problems.." i only eat vegetables, fruit and meat. no dairy and no bread. i don't like those hard rolls anyway. and we're walking about miles every day, we never stop walking.
i am so afraid, i don't know how to calm down.
the gastro gave me celexa but i had a reaction. my chest started hurting and felt like it was closing. i couldn't get my breath so i stopped it. it was only 10 mg but i hated it.
i can't cancel this trip, i absolutely can't. husband would have a stroke and we'd be out all that money.
any suggestions? and yep i'm going to ask that surgeon about it, but it won't help, the night before we leave to find out we can't go.
and my sister is going freaking crazy on me, saying you don't operate for "mild", yada yada yada. even the one who has been hospitalized twice now says no way, if you have to come home and go to my doctor. they're both just ballistic...
oh gripes, help.....

randi, since you have had a few episodes, you know the symptoms of diverticulitis now.
If it starts up, then you see the ship's doctor, call your doctor, or even leave the ship for medical attention if necessary. So, there is no need to be afraid of going.
You take your antibiotics with you, and that is likely all you will need. The key to handling diverticulitis for the rest of your life is recognizing when an episode is starting and treating it quickly so that it goes away. I have friends who have learned to do this, and they live well with diverticulitis.
Enjoy Belize! It is beautiful.

Ellen posted a very good website recently that I looked at because my mother has a terrible time with IBS. Maybe you can look at the information on the foods and things to avoid that trigger irritable bowel or spastic colon and attacks.
It also has some great suggestions for foods and drinks that have a calming effect on the colon, such as fennel or peppermint tea. (You can bring some along!)

We were on a cruise in November and I got the dreaded norowalk virus the last night. Thankful I didn't go to the ship doctor as a trip would have cost us 250bucks. Didn't know that till we got back. Check with your cruise line to see what they charge. I am a lot like you I worry. This was our first cruise so I was a bit freaked out. But once on ship I saw all the beauty and relaxed and had an amazing time. As you will too. I have only seen Belize in pictures but it looks so beautiful and the wildlife looks nice too. Enjoy!

yep i got that too, on a 21 day trip to south america. i went to the ship's doctor (cost 135), and they were lined up in the hallway. it was celebrity and they were very nice. they had announcements on the speakers and all.
i was coughing so hard the people in the suite next to us heard me and asking husband how i was doing. man, i was sick. course, i found out later almost 1/3 of all the passengers were sick. luckily it was on the way home.
went to the doctor when i got home and he said i should have been in the hospital. but i stayed home, didn't go out, and it took weeks, absolutely weeks to recover.
husband still says stress is causing all this. when i get upset my stomach goes all knots. i get physically sick, errr sicker with lyme...lol
anyway he's right about the cruise. i seem to relax, sleep better, and exercise a ton.
course i can't cruise forever.
my one sister laughed and said "oh i have just the thing. get a boob job, a tummy tuck, and you'll be fine. spend money on yourself."

Well stress does it worse for people dealing with chronic issues. Your ships doctor was a lot cheaper than Disney cruises doctor lol. And there are people who live on a cruise ship. It is like a huge apartment on the sea. I think it is super expensive though but man would that be fun! And I hope your sis was kidding. Any surgery like that would probably be very bad for us. I see from your other post your hubby is sick. Sure hope he gets better before the cruise.
