Yes. That is what some do - to one of the stores near the person to receive the gift -- or an online vendor (if they have computer, not everyone does).

Best to get a gift card from a clerk, though - that they store safely behind the counter to be sure it's not been compromised.

Those just hanging out on display can be invisibly "stolen" just by the swipe of a little gadget that crooks can use very fast. The cards still look good but all the detail & the pin number is transferred to their gadget so it's void by the time someone goes to use it.

Also either keep or send receipt in case there is a problem with the card registering.
