I haven't touched it since a very bad experience i had down in Florida when I was first getting sick. My face swelled up and turned red, I had rashes and swollen glands.

My first foray into multiple chemical sensitivity.

Does anyone have an easy brand they use that doesn't land them in the hospital? I've tried a couple of high end henna products and they're just a pain.

Anything out of a box, PPD free, covers gray?

You need to try some of the natural colorings if you insist on doing it.

Go to the health food store and ask about it.

No way would I ever try it myself with my MCAS. Nope.

Just because it might be free of one harsh chemical does not mean it won't contain a slew of others that could pose a risk. Same thing with the "new" telfons or "safe" plastics that are free of one bad chemical but off-gas others.

Any coloring is likely to just coat the hair and continually contact your scalp -- and your towels with each wash.

How about a new cute style? SILVER is the new chic look, really. How about some new fashion items instead.

Our skin, our scalp absorbs whatever we put on it. Even the "natural" hair colors are full of chemicals I don't want in my blood stream. They aren't really very natural at all. There might be one or two, or a few, "natural" things in the listing but read further.

Some still are bad for the lungs & eyes during application process and if they get that kind of exposure even for an hour, damage can happen for long after that.

And consider that whatever you put on your hair, you will be eating and drinking later on - as it makes its way into the water supply & food supply.

However, if you'd want something to brighten up the silver, that might be something that would more clean off an residue and a one time thing to wash away. CLARIFY is the kind of shampoo to look for.

Too often, I know from my own saga with hair choices, we might think the color of our hair will define us as vibrant and gorgeous. Well, no matter the shade, the vibrancy really has to come from within. And if we poison our brains and bodies, we wont' be able to carry off even the most chemically attained style.

But, with the most frumpy hat, a person who is happy and vibrant even if their body is challenged, well that will shine though in your face and your presence.

Please, embrace silver. It's as good as gold.

Google "organic hair coloring salon" and add what town/city in FL you are in.

A number of links will come up.

I just wanted something out of a box. I barely leave my house, I wouldn't go to a salon. Time, money, energy. But something must be done.

I had to give up coloring a couple years ago. But after not being able to tolerate standard dyes, I was able to tolerate Naturcolor for a few years. it has no ammonia.

Aside from buying natural hair dyes at a health food store, here are some links which might help:

If you never leave the house, why color your hair?

Be sure to read the full list of ingredients. Not just the ones they put in their synopsis page.

In the past, when I could lift my arms over my head, I bought Avigal Henna.....(think that's what the brand is but close to it}.

I bought a strawberry blonde package online but I think they had other colors. Now henna is red to begin with and all it is is the actual henna plant in it. A bit messy but I just wash and rinse it in the shower.

It's a powder and b/c all natural it's actually filled with little twigs and such, but not so much it's a problem. I would even try to do it by myself again, because it's a powder you add hot water and conditioner to it. Wear gloves as it stains and I'd have a friend do it or ask your hairdresser if they would make it up and apply in the salon? If you pay them, I'm sure they'll do it.

I believe if you want to.....pick one that is safe without chemicals. Always do a patch test on your arm first, so if you have a reaction, it's before it's in your hair! ;-)

I know others worry for you and the effect it may cause you, but I'd search for something you are comfortable with, even if you have to call the company to check first if it's all natural. I don't use ANYTHING ANYWHERE anymore that has chemicals in it.

Good luck Jordana......I'm sure you are beautiful with or without it. [Cool]

Oh, and it's temporary and comes out with each washing if the tone is too much at first. Just a thought..

Lymetoo, I think even if you don't leave the house, if it makes YOU feel better even just doing it and seeing it in the mirror all by yourself could make a person a little more upbeat and feel better about yourself. Girls like to be girlie whenever they can. I say if you find one that is safe, I wouldn't say "why?".

Now, understand that I stopped doing it b/c I can't do it myself anymore. But I still do put a little safe makeup on or a lip color can make you feel better some days. Just my opinion of course!

I'm a long time henna lover. Real henna is only one color and that is red, from the lawsone content of the dried leaf powder. Real henna is also very permanent, much more so than most marriages anymore. It binds with the keratin in the hair strand, not only coloring but also strengthening the hair. So best to strand test unless you are prepared to love any result.

Any powdered plant for hair coloring or conditioning (henna, indigo, cassia and others) should never have any twigs in it. When I think of "high end" henna I think of BAQ (body art quality) powders with a higher lawsone content. BAQ henna is a very fine sift, so easier to mix and rinse.

There's some online vendors that sell reliably great quality henna. If you have any Indian shops local you should be able to get the "Nupur" brand which is pretty good and inexpensive. It contains some other traditional Indian hair herbs as well. Jamila is another brand often found locally.

In bigger cities there are sometimes places that will apply henna for hair. Unfortunately coloring with henna does involve slapping the paste on your head for a while then rinsing it out, but it does get easier each time and there's tricks that can help too.

You know actually I think the reason I thought of this is because I haven't been able to see myself in the mirror for about a year. It was strange, I mean I could *see* the person in the mirror but it seemed like I couldn't take in my face as a whole or something. My vision was blurred but it was more than that.

Now that I'm on abx I feel a lot sicker every day and I have to compartmentalize my energy. I actually *write down* things like "shower". I still have a shake attack exactly six hours after waking up every day.

But my eyes are a little bit back. Isn't that odd.

I had that weird tunnel vision too where I couldn't really see my or other's whole faces. So many strange symptoms to this disease.

Maybe just move to Santa Fe instead of coloring your hair. I was there last week and it seemed like gray hair was the look for women.

I just googled it and it seems like it's actually a thing there:

Well, she looks stunning but I'm in that gray area of gray, lol. A little more pepper than salt.

Thanks for suggestions all. Perhaps I'll revisit this after my second nap [Smile] .

That's cool, project.

I meant no offense, Jordana. I know we have to feel good about ourselves. I really don't care if my hair goes gray. So far, it's fine. I am too chemically sensitive to do anything about it if/when it goes gray.

Well, I'm too tired at the moment to care that much but I'm always aware that if I *did*actually have to go anywhere, I look like hell.

Every once In a while i also think to myself that I better make sure I'm clean enough to get carted away by ambulance. This is what gets me into the shower, lol.
