GROUNDHOG DAY!!!

How are you going to celebrate Groundhog Day?

I will.. someday... get to go in person to see Pauxatany Phil come out and see... or not see... his shadow. Would THAT be a total thrill?? Yes sir... it sure would float MY boat!

To celebrate, I am going to bake a cake... and I am going to make peach tea. And I am going to sing too... all day long. And dance on the table with my fruit covered hat on!

I am going to put on all the lights in the house and turn the TV on and wait anxiously for him to show up tomorrow morning.

I get sooooo excited I can barely sleep the night before! What a FUN day.. It is my favorite day of the year.

And... if that little sweet groundhog doesn't tell me spring is coming ASAP...

You all are invited to supper...

Groundhog stew!

Hey TC,

Happy Groundhog's day!!!

Well, TC may be a nut, but I am celebrating Groundhog's Day tomorrow too....

As most of you know I Homeschool my 6 & 4 year old children. So I get to spend Groundhogs day watching Phil look for his shadow.

Yippee!!!

We are also having a Tea Party... wanna come TC??

You said "I am going to sing too... all day long. And dance on the table with my fruit covered hat on!"

As you plan on singing and dancing tomorrow, I thought I'd pass on some of the songs the kids and I sing .... have fun!

It Came Upon The Morning Clear
Tune = It Came Upon The Midnight Clear
 1991 by Don Halley

It came upon the morning clear, that hideous story of old
When groundhogs see their shadows out in the bitter cold
Snows on the earth, windchill again in our vocabulary
For this is now the Groundhog's Day, Second of February

Phillip the Weather Groundhog
Tune = Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer
 1991 by Don Halley

You know Bambi and Lassie and Goofy and Winnie
Smokey and Porky and Mickey and Minnie
But do you recall the most famous mammal of all...

Phillip the weather groundhog has a very chilly task
And if you ever watch him, be sure to wear your ski mask
All of the other groundhogs stay inside their cubbyholes
They never help poor Phillip look for any shadows
On the second of this month, Phillip comes to say
"Winter with your arctic blasts, won't you go away at last"
But if he sees his shadow, then we know that it will be
Six weeks or maybe more, till the winter's history

The Ballad of Punxsutawney Phil
Tune = The Ballad of Jed Clampett (The Beverly Hillbillies theme)
 1988 by Don Halley

Come and listen to a story 'bout a groundhog, Phil
He sleeps throughout the winter to escape the bitter chill
And then one day on February Two
He's up from the ground, and here's what he will do
Open his eyes - Look around - Prognosticate

Well the next thing y'know, ol' Phil's a media star
Camera crews and newsmen come from near and far
To Punxsutawney town in the middle of PA
To determine whether winter will go or will it stay
Six more weeks - Maybe longer - In Minnesota

A shadow means a longer nap for Phil and all his kin
They begin to huddle up and start a new sleep-in
But you and me we just can't sleep throughout the winter here
So have a heapin' hopin' the shadow won't appear

Oh I Wish I Was A Punxsutawney Groundhog
Tune = The Oscar Mayer Wiener Song
 1998 by Don Halley

Oh I wish I was a Punxsutawney groundhog
That is what I'd truly like to be
Some other folks would rather be a hot dog
But I think that is just plain ol' silly

Oh I wish I was a Punxsutawney groundhog
Telling all if springtime soon is near
'Cause if I was a Punxsutawney groundhog
I'd only have to work one day a year

Groundhog Patriotism
Battle Hymn of the Groundhog

Tune = Battle Hymn of the Republic
 1989 by Don Halley

Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the sun
I ramble o'er the meadow where my forecasting is done
And if I see my shadow then there's six more weeks to come
As winter marches on

Glory! Glory! Hallelujah!
Springtime may be coming to ya
Wipe away the winter blues, yah!
Happy Groundhog's Day!

Spring Is Coming
Tune = Jesus Loves Me
 1990 by Don Halley

Spring is coming, this I know
For the groundhog tells me so
The snow is deep and it's ten below
But he did not see his shadow

Yes! Spring is coming
Yes! Spring is coming
Yes! Spring is coming
The groundhog tells me so

Hark! The Herald Groundhog Speaks
Tune = Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
 1999 by Don Halley

Hark! the herald groundhog speaks
Spring will come in six more weeks
He's unearthed for us today
Gathered round to hear him say
Just this morning he did rise
Wiped the sleep out of his eyes
Then he looked for his shadow
Found it at his feet below
Hark! the herald groundhog speaks
Spring will come in six more weeks

Mister Groundhog
Tune = Mister Sandman
 1991 by Don Halley

Mister Groundhog bring me a spring
Make it the soonest that I've ever seen
Please don't have your shadow seen
Mister Groundhog bring me a spring

I've Got Friends in Low Places
Tune = I've Got Friends in Low Places
 1991 by Don Halley

Blame it all on my eyes and those somewhat gray skies
My guess turned out to be wrong
I made my forecast that the cold wouldn't last
And the winter soon would be gone
But the next thing we knew the arctic winds blew
And the snows continued to fall
Now you're mad at me and I'm glad to be
Down where you can't crawl

Oh I've got friends in low places
Where the groundhogs sleep and they hide their faces
So they're never wrong if the winter's long
I'm not scared of your chases
'Cause I'm down here in this oasis
Oh I've got friends in low places

The Shadow Knows It Best, Yes
Tune = The Yellow Rose of Texas
 2002 by Don Halley

Oh the shadow knows it best, yes - when springtime will arrive
The weathermen are clueless, their models do not jibe
Computers crunch the numbers, and spit out a forecast
That cannot match the groundhog's for how long the cold will last

Chorus: Oh this furry little groundhog should be in the Hall of Fame
Compared to others' forecasts, he puts them all to shame
You may talk about your isobars or of the jet stream flow
But the shadow knows it best, yes. That is all I need to know

Computers are not perfect, they all can make mistakes
The groundhog is my hero, he has just what it takes
I know that I can trust him, he'll go out on a limb
While the guys in suits will hem and haw and say the odds are slim (Chorus)

If the shadow now is showing, the winter will be long
Six weeks seem like forever, oh help me to be strong
But if he does not see it, springtime will soon be here
And those of us with frozen toes can all stand up and cheer (Chorus)

Happy Groundhog's Day , TC....

~Brat

A poem for those of you with children:

Mr. Groundhog down below,
Pops up through the fluffy snow;
Sees his shadow, makes him go,
Winter's here to stay! OH NO!

Mr. Groundhog down below,
Pops up through the fluffy snow;
Wide awake he wants to play;
Spring is on it's way! HURRAY!

Well, it's a good thing they don't judge the groundhog seeing his shadow here in Evansville...it's supposed to be 65 degrees here!

Which I love it....but I want more of it!! It will back down to 16 degrees for lows by mid-week.

I hope the ol hog doesn't see his shadow!!!

But it is a good reason to have a party!

I'll be at a friends house helping to clean...she broke her foot last week.

Party on!

CJ

I suppose that the main story about the loss of the space crew pushed Mr Ground Hog off of the front page. I missed the news. Did he see his shadow, or didn't he?

I kinda' hope we get a longer winter because our winter days (most of them) are so NICE down here. It's been in the low 60s and sunny -- great for being out doors. I dread spring pollens and summer heat.

Fall and winter can't last long enough for me, except for those few days when it drops down into the 30s and nights when it drops down into the 20s and we have to cover our plants and be sure the pets all come indoors at night.

So, what happened with Mr. GH yesterday, huh? Anybody know?

Hey Tx Mom,

Here is a blurb form CNN about Groundhog Day yesturday....

Feb 2, 2003: Groundhog Sees Shadow; Winter Continues New From CNN:

Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his hutch on Gobbler's Knob and saw his shadow, which according to folklore means that spring weather is still six weeks away.

We celebrated by puppy poop scooping the back yard. (There's mold in them thar hills)
FUN or WHAT!

We also took some dog pic's & got ready to not celebrate our 'paper' anniversary on Feb 3rd. That's the day we actually got married, rather than the day we moved in together.

We are not celebrating our anniversary again this year because, in Time Honoured Tradition -we is broke ag'in.

Hey hey...

Good to know I am not the only "goof ball" at Lyme Net. Some of you rank right up there in the top ten with me!

Love the poems and songs! Thanks so much! I sent some to my "little one" so he could celebrate Groundhog Day in style.

He wrote back...

"Mom, You gotta get out of the house more! PLEASE.. no more groundhog songs!"

I also decided to call a phone number at 2 AM and sing one of the songs on the recorder so it would be there for the person when they checked their messages.

Well.. as MY luck would have it.. I called expecting a message machine on a cell phone.

Hmmmm... the person had not left the phone in their vehicle that night... and had fallen asleep with it laying next to them.

When they actually answered the phone at 2 AM... I was shocked and kinda freaked... and then said.. what the hay...

I sang two songs straight through... with them not saying a word... then I hung up.

Needless to say.... They thought for sure I was at least one sandwich short of a picnic!

Oh well... never a dull moment... hehehe

By the way... Pux Phil did see his shadow.... and that meant another 6 weeks of winter was still to come... and that night I had groundhog stew for supper....

That will teach him!

Thanks for all the posts... they made me giggle and smile...

Tincup,

Today is my Dad's favorite holiday too!

My seven year old came in this morning and announced, "I don't care what that out of state groundhog says, what does Pa's groundhog say?" I had no clue my Dad had a ground hog! But my son insists he saw a groundhog in Pa's front yard!

So i called my Dad and gave him a heads up that the kids would want a ground hog report this evening! I'll let you know what he says!

Linda

Winter to continue...Sorry..The 2 big groundhogs in Pa both agreed..However, at 7:30am the traditional reporting time, at my house it was overcast and the sun hadn't gotten over the ridge..So we will have an early spring...
