Yesterday we had a new addition to our family!!

Hali is her name, she is an eight month old choclate lab! Some friends of my mom's had bought her from a breeder, fixed her, trained her but didn't have time to spend with her and were going to give her to a pound after spending over a thousand dollars on this dog!!!

I have been wanting a pure blood lab but couldn't afford one so my mom called me and and I went and got her!! What a great FREEBIE!!! She is adorable!

It's good for me too it makes me get out of the house and walk her. The kids love her too. I needed a bright spot, there she is.

Wow! What a nice surprise for you! I am such an animal lover!!

I wanted to let you know though, I also had a lab, and I was told by the vet to keep a close eye on her hips... I guess they are known to get arthritis in them. I'm sure Hail will be fine though... just want to make sure you are aware of this.

That is wonderful for you and your family.

I had a black Lab to live to be 14...she was the light of our lives. She died in 1999 after bringing us great joy.

Lock up anything you do not want chewed up till she is at least 2 years old. That includes all your jewelry, too.

Labs are notorious for chewing during those first two years. Have plenty of hooves for her to chew.

Babygirl, Labs are known to get what is called hip displasia, not arthritis, but, they do get that too.

Sent, we just last year, since we were ready, adopted a Standard Poodle. I am now convienced that our next dog will be a Labradoodle...that has the best of both breeds. But, Cayce is only 2.5 years old and, hopefully, he has many more years left.

My Cayce had been a lifesaver for me as I don't get out much and he keeps me company. Then, Chip comes home and he (Cayce) is all over him. They share a bed together every night. And, he is a natural clown...we've never laughed so much at a dog as we have our Standard.

Just give her lots of attention and love and you'll have a great pet, for sure.

Rosemary

lyme brain that I am, I didn't mention WHY I wanted a lab. I was given one by a friend a few years back just before I got sick.(edited for Rosie ) At my wife's job was a contractor who also bred labs. He had gotten a lab from some champion line, it even had made Dog Fancy mag it was such a big deal this litter. The dog he got at first developed the hip displisia that you mentioned so he went back and got another female but kept the original one.

Nicki was her name. She had a habbit of eating the other dog's food, you see they could go and run and play whereas she couldn't. So John, the contractor, gave us Nicki the fat, black lab. Absolutely the best dog I ever had.

Also the smartest. We had to by a side by side fridge because she would open the one we had and help herself to food. She would open the french doors on our pantry and snack in there too. She learned how to open the sliding doors to our patio so she would let her self out for a swim if the mood hit her.

My wife would put a pillow under her head and cover her with a blanket when she slept. I kept telling her it was a silly thing to do. Then one day, I would not have believed it if I didn't see it myself, Nicki went and got a pillow off the couch, set it on the floor, went into the bedroom got a blanket layed on the floor by the pillow and rolled herself in the blanket!!!

Ultimately the pain from her hips was too much for her and the cost for vet care was too much for us so off to lab rescue with her pedigree it was no problem.

As for Hali (as in Hali Berry) if she had displasia it would have shown up by six months, And yes she loves to chew.

Oh, Sent, you had to add a sad story didn't you. But, with the experience you've now had, I'm sure this new pup will be with you a long time.

So sorry about the other two puppys. I'm so glad your Lab has you for her parent now.
