well, she's 3 yrs old but still a "puppy" to me. She started having seizures after getting Lyme and has been on numerous rounds of doxy which has helped her tremendously, except with her seizures. She generally has a grand mal seizure every 4 weeks.
Today she went into severe status epilepitus and couldn't come out of it on her own. We drove her to the vet...she was still seizing after 20 min, they admistered IVs, valium and anticonvulsants. Her temp was 109 deg. which is VERY dangerous. Due to the hyperthermia they suspected brain swelling and gave her steroids as well.
I don't know if this is TBD related or not, but while she was at the vet's I pulled yet another tick off her head (my yard is infested).
She is staying overnight in the emergency care unit and being closely monitered. They are unsure of her prognosis at this point, but I'm trying so hard to stay positive.
I'm a mess and had to sedate myself just to deal with this! She's not "just" a dog, she's my best friend and has helped me sooooo much, I'm sick and home all the time and she's always by my side. I know some people dont understand human/animal relationships, but I truly have an amazing connection with her and I NEED her to pull through this.

SunRa, Can't tell you how sorry I am that your puppy is having these problems.
Anyone who has had a devoted pet will understand the strong bond that exists. They can't talk but they definitely communicate & give emotional support!!
When you're able, let us know how she is doing. Will certainly keep both of you in our prayers.

cbb and Missy,
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your prayers. Things have been incredibly rough lately as it is, so I am not handling this new crisis very well.
I've been calling to check up on her and her temp has gone down which is good, but she is still in poor condition
I need to get some sleep but I'm so worried. I'll write more tomorrow. Thank you so much for your kind words and prayers.

Hi SunRa,
Just checking in to see how "our puppy" is doing today?
My children Derek and Mikayla have been praying for her all day as well. I sure hope that her fever coming down is a good sign.

Hi SunRa, my prayers are with you. My dog of 11 years was sick from pancreatitis and arithritis, and I never put the lyme equation together...this was five years ago.
She was my first baby, so I know how much your puppy means to you. I basically have the same symptoms as my dog did. Great. Now I know where my tick bite came from.
One prayer on its way to the great Dog God in the sky.

wow, I am overwhelmed with all your sweet and caring messages.
I'm so grateful for all your prayers - it seems they are being heard!! She has come a long way since yesterday which is very encouraging!
As of right now she hasnt had any more full seizures which is very good and her temperature is back to normal. Today she was even able to stand and attempted to walk. Though very wobbly, her coordination seems to be ok which is a very good sign! Poor thing has NO IDEA where she is or who we are, etc.
The vet says the next few days will be crucial in determining how well she will recover. Her whole body went into shock from both the continuous seizures as well as the hyperthermia so right now I'm just so happy she's alive. They are keeping her in the ICU again tonight to closely moniter her, so please keep praying that she continues to improve!
Thank you all soooo much! This is a very stressful time for me so your support and concern are deeply appreciated. I will keep you updated.
I have 2 furry "children", so I know how you feel. We called our first dog the "puppy" for the 13 years she was with us. It's so hard when they're sick. They give us so much and ask for nothing in return, except maybe a pat on the head. Well, mine asks to be in my lap (all 55 lbs of her), but that's another story...
Hope things are still improving today. You're in my thoughts. KB

SunRa, it's good to hear that your 'puppy' is a little bit better, even when she doesn't know who you are (maybe she is just to tired and desorientated because she is in a strange area).
I know too good what you are going through. Two of the brothers of my oldest 'puppy' (four years next August) died by epilepsy. Both at the age of three. I will let him tested for this in the future. He seems to be in a good health.
I wish you and your 'puppy' good luck and a healthy life.
Greetings from the Netherlands,

The past few days have been very difficult, but every response here made me smile and helped me more than you know!
GOOD NEWS!!! My Puppy is HOME!!! YIPPEEE!!
We brought her home last night. The FIRST time she wagged her tail in days was when she was greeted by our other dog, a 5 yr old golden retriever. They are very close and it was amazing that she recognized him!
By the way, she is a 3 yr old black flat-coat retriever and always very energetic, I hope one day she can get back to her favourite activity - running. Shes FAST and nothing gets in the way of her and the ball.
She still has a ways to go, but the progress she has made already is incredible and she has even amazed the vets. The night of the episode, the vet had warned us of a "grim prognosis" and we left there feeling so devastated and empty. But now she is licking my face again and even got up onto her favourite couch all by herself!
She is eating and drinking on her own now and though very wobbly and losing her balance often, she is able to walk. Thankfully she has not had another seizure but we are very nervous and watching her constantly.
We're waiting for some blood work results back, but the vets say if she had a lot of organ damage, she would probably be deteriorating by now, so we have our fingers crossed that all the results come back ok and that she continues to progess more each day.
I do not know if this was from Lyme, but they did suspect brain swelling (Lyme encephalitis?) and she did have that new tick bite on her head. I highly suspect a TBD greatly attributed to this and the vet decided to put her on abx yesterday due to some of her symptoms.
Many dogs do not get a second chance after going through what she went through and my heart goes out to all of you who know too well what that is like.
Right now it's a lot of work caring for her and I am completely exhausted, but she is worth it! The stress has greatly affected my health but now that she's home I feel a bit more relaxed and I am confident my friend and I will heal together
Thank you all again for the kind words and prayers!!! They mean so much to me.
