but it COST hundreds of thousands (if not even more miillions), of lives (I'm not at all convinced of this "millions" figure, anyway, given what I've read.) As well as billions of dollars in rebuilding (for japan, you might say-- but it unquestionably came back to 'us', too- in fact 'we' actually did - had to, really-- help some with such!)
DEFINITELY not a cost-effective solution; in facr the antithesis of such! (especially when hidden costs are considered.
I do believe, though, that the 'leaders' of this country's 'war effort' did not realize how brutal these bombs would be. I they had, don't you think to give japan a "demonstration" in a less populated but perhaps strategically important (for esample, a naval harbor) whould have been seen as sufficient?

If there was NO Pearl Harbor, there would have been no Nagasaki or Hiroshima.
In 1969, my dad died from complications suffered as a result of cleaning up both those places after WWII was declared over. He didn't come home until December 22, 1945 months after many of the other enlisted.

It's too bad that innocent lives were lost, but that's what happens when your country tries to take over the world.
I completely laugh out loud at people that criticize the government for dropping the bombs. The freaking freedom of the world was at stake for one. Secondly, we were going to have to invade Japan which would've been 100 times more gruesome than D-day ever was. And the fact is most of those same people in Japan would've died with a US invasion. We saved AMERICAN lives, and that was the point. They came after us.
And for bleeding hearts like Dave, how can you sit there and talk about the horrible bombs, yet not ever mention that the Japs killed 12 million Chinese people with their push west to meet up with the Nazi push east in Asia. How can you not mention that???????
There were 52 million people directly killed during WWII. The USA only lost about 250,000, but it could've been a lot worse if we didn't have some technology on our side.

It's nice to see such gentle, forgiving people willing to turn someone else's other cheek time after time. So where is all this going, war crimes against America?

My personal opinion is that the Pres. of the US in the 1940's knew Pearl Harbor was going to happen--and let it. To get us into the war.
The Japanese would have never given up.
What is amazing is that fewer people died at Pearl Harbor (which was a military target) than died at the WTC (which was civilian) and we waited, waited, waited before responding.

I dont know that we ever will know for sure if the decision was the correct one. But I do believe that it was the best decision at the time with the information we had.
