I have recently started to solve sudoku's to keep what little mind I have left, functioning.

I can do the simple, medium and started recently to do the hard rated ones.

Read some sites and got the basics down. BUT the explanantions and directions of looking for pairs and triples and quad numbers of sets and subsets goes right OVER my head.

I understand about pairs, but can somebody , in plain English, explain triples and quads, sets and subsets???

I would like to move on to the very hard and the fiendish ones BUT cant until I get past the obstacle of understanding.

I think the principle of eliminating prospects and crosshatching, which it 'can' be and which it 'cant' be is realtively straight forward. But the tripps and quads and how to spot them leaves me in the dust.

Any body want to 'try' to teach this old dog a new trick??? Woof, woof, says --just don--

I do Sudoku puzzles all the time but I don't know what you mean by some of the terms you are using. So I guess I can't explain them to you.

Where did you get these terms? Perhaps if I saw their origin I could relate them to something I am doing (or maybe not!).

I do enjoy doing them and find they help keep my mind working as I care for my 97 year old mother.

95% of all suduko puzzles can be done with triplets of quads.
my iq at one time was 178 now 129 and i
can't concentrate on quads.
you can solve without this knowledge and is really complex and too hard for me to use.

triples that i use are 137, 137, 12 on same line
or column. then you can put the 2 in the space.
12, 23, and 13 don't help you.
i try to use pairs as much as possible so when i'm near the end, almost everything is paired up.
can't always do it but 95% you can.

i have been using suduko to monitor every morning my mental abilities for the day,
and the loss over the last 2 years.

it does help you concentrate more.
my biggest problem with the suduko is
number dyslexia, and putting the numbers in the wrong box.
i have bad concentration when it comes to numbers and often switch things that shouldn't be.

Don,
Are you playing them online or on paper? The site below has just started having online ones.

I've just figured out how to use it but you can light up whatever number you're looking at. Say 7's and it makes it easier for me to see patterns I hadn't before. It seems I got another piece of the logic. (specifically the "can" and "can't" be's I was missing)

I hadn't done much Sudoko before because I had difficulty getting seeing all the options. I just did the easy - medium ones. ok, still doing easy - medium ones but am better at it. [Wink]

Usually, I do the Link-a-Pix first, as they are easiest and most fun for me. Then the easier Pick-a-Pix. It's free to register and puzzles are updated every Sunday.

It seems my mind can work much better with these logic/math puzzles than anything else. And my brain isn't working on a lot lately.

Don,

Did you find any answers? Here is some stuff I learned while playing Sudoku.

When you get stuck look at rows and columns that have five or more filled in cells, then investigate those numbers that still need to be inserted.

Concentrate mostly on numbers that occur frequently in the grid as a whole, or concentrate on parts of the grid that have a lot of filled in cells.

If you are really desperate choose a cell with as few little numbers as possible and work through the possibilites one at a time to see the consequences of choosing each - you may get lucky and eliminate some.
