can anyone tell me pretty quickly how paypal works,how you get money into it and how you get money out of it??? And please tell me how 'secure' is it??? Like would one post paypal info to specific account on net talk forum and NOT get ripped off?? I know zip about paypal,,,so anything YOU can tell me is MORE than I know now.
We have been asked to use it as a conduit to the puter fund we are collecting for. And I feel real dumb not knowing beans from applebutter about it!!! Thx from--just don--

don its real secure. i used a program to access my account with a different ip address and it immediately sent me an email freezing my account.
they are pretty sharp, they are owned by ebay, and they don't want problems with their transactions.
i've had my credit card number on four several years and never had a problem. you can open an account send money then close the account if you are afraid.
they will even take money out of your bank account if you want.

...and when you pay thru PayPal on Ebay, the auction is immediately paid.
This puts the seller in the postition of sending your package or product right away!--as opposed to waiting for the money to reach them or a check to clear, etc.

Don, I have used Paypal not only to pay for items I have bought on EBay but also to send money to other persons for different reasons.
It is very easy to set up a Paypal account. You can go to Paypal.com and follow the directions. Then if someone wants to send you money they can do it that way but they also need a paypal account.
I have never had a single problem with Paypal. They require a password that you create when you open an account. As I remember, you can also create a user name that is different from your email address so your email address stays private.
Once a Paypal account is set up, you can actually send an invoice to anyone with a paypal account. I believe that is the easiest way to get money. Also, if you let someone else know your paypal account name, a person could just send money.
Paypal then always sends an email confirming that money has been sent to you.
Going to the paypal site and looking it over does not require that you sign up if you don't want to.

I for one am baffled by Pay Pal. I haven't used it too much.
Just this week, I received an e-mail telling me about the authorization of the payment for an item on ebay. Of course I hadn't done this.
Scared, I clicked on the link to dispute the charge, and then it started asking me for my password, and then for practically my entire profile including credit card information.
I had no idea whether this was legitimate.
I reported it to PayPal, who then sent me an e-mail saying this was indeed a fraudulent e-mail. And to change my password to my account which I did. (That was as far as I got - I didn't enter any other information.)
The thing is - the senders of both e-mails - the original 'fraudulent' and the reply from PayPal saying that e-mail was 'fraudulent' seemed to have the same address.
Confused confused confused.
I just closed the account. That wasn't the first time I received a "fishy" paypal e-mail.
I was wondering whether it was just a ruse by PayPal to get me to update my account information (?). Nevertheless, the whole *business* made me very uneasy.

That is indeed scary,,,too many scams I am barely able to unravel the maze. I have heard the scammers(paypal imitators) or any site imitators like the e- bay one, take pride in making their fake site look like the original scammed site!!
Okay further question
"is it safe to post someones paypal account name here or anywhere and NOT have it robbed??"
Or are the hackers good enough to hack thru any firewall, safestops!!????

Ah- maybe THAT was the problem. Recently I tried to buy something on ebay and couldn't get 'paypal' to work. Maybe I accessed it from a different computer. I tried entering 2 different credit cards (supPOSEdly it's secure!!) butit wouldn't accept either. Finnally I just had to turn off the computer; I couldn't get out of the 'paypal' thing. A real drag; a waste of time, and now I'm probably "blacklisted" on ebay! DaveS

I cannot believe this. I closed my PayPal account and I just got another e-mail, exactly like the one before, saying it was confirming a payment I had made (which I didn't!). ARggghhhh!

I had a phoney email last year too. They were looking for personal information.
Knowing the crooks are out there, all you need do is NOT respond to the email. Then go to the PayPal site and make sure everything is fine....that your password still works and then report it to them.
Also, the crooks will send you a second chance offer on EBay auctions you were outbid on. You can contact the original seller by email to see if they did contact you....and give them a heads up on the scam.

First of all, my apologies for the lengthy response.
There is an easy way to tell if the email you received is truly from PayPal or not. Just move your cursor over the link - Do Not Click - just let your cursor "hover" over the link. Then, look at your monitor (ususally at bottom where it says "done"). It will show you the entire address the link would take you to if you were to click on it. You can usually see that there is a lot of other information that is not paypal.
Example: one of them I received had a subject: "Security Measures" and the message said they had noticed several attempts to access my account from a foreign IP address and if it truly was me that was trying to log in while traveling, to just click on the link and follow the instructions.
As you can tell, they are very different. So I reported it to paypal and to yahoo.
NOTE: The site I would have been redirected to does not have https but only http.
https - the "s" stands for secure.
Other subject lines have said: "your payment has been sent to....." "Receipt of your payment....." "Receipt for your payment to payments..."
And it is difficult to tell if the "from" is real or not: Some of the spam/junk, etc have been from: [email protected] paypalsecuritymesures paypal PayPal Customer Support
(note the misspelling of the word measures - misspelled words happens a lot in spam/junk emails in the subject and the message)
Here are some parts of the message I received when I forwarded the spam to Paypal: For additional tips please visit the PayPal Security Center at https://www.paypal.com/security Important: PayPal and its representatives will NEVER ask you to reveal your password. There are NO EXCEPTIONS to this policy. If anyone claiming to work for PayPal asks for your password under any circumstances, by email or by phone, please refuse and immediately contact us via our secure webform online.
Also, the message was from [email protected] and the subject said RE: Q### - Thank you for your email to PayPal (################) (NOTE: I'm not putting in all the numbers from my email)
Unfortunately, phishing/scamming/spoofing is getting more and more popular.
Never click on these links. Always report them to paypal - [email protected]
If someone uses yahoo for this, you can report that to yahoo and they will close that other person's account down.
How do they get your email address? From other sites that share your information with other sites, who then sell your information. Always read "terms of use/service" etc. when joining a new website to make sure they do not share information.
Here's a good example of just how good their security works! This is a true story that just happened this past September!
My friend in California emailed me and said she had sent me some money through paypal and for me to go there and create an account so I could get the money. (I was getting ready to have back surgery and she figured money would be better than sending flowers).
So, I went to paypal and when I tried to create an account, it said there was already an account with that email address! So, I went to the contact page and found a phone number and called.
I explained the situation. I told them I had never created a paypal account with that email address. I was told it was created in the year 2000 and confirmed. (they send you a confirmation email and you have to click on the link to confirm). I still insisted that I had never done this.
The lady asked me if I was the sole owner of the email address. I told her yes, but I remembered that my daughter and son-in-law were living with me at the time. Then she tells me the account has been suspended for non-use because it was never used after it was opened!!
So I asked then how was I going to get the money my friend sent. She told me I couldn't get it. I told her then she would have to send it back to my friend. She told me, no, they could not do that. I told her I did not think they could keep someone's money...that if I could not get it, then they have to give it back. Especially since I had no way of knowing that I had previously had an account! Needless to say, I got nowhere with her, so I just told her that I would contact my friend and have her call. I was sure she would be able to get her money back!! And that's what I did - called my friend.
About 30 minutes later, someone else from Paypal called me back. I explained what had happened. She told me that she had my friend on hold and asked permission to connect her for a 3-way call - I said "sure!"
We resolved the problem by completely closing the already suspended account! I opened a new account with my yahoo email address, and I received the money. It ended up being a very simple solution.
Now, I know they were tracking my first phone call, because I used my cell phone to call them and that was the number they called me back on - not my home phone, which is the # that is listed for contact on my account.
So, I hope that helps you to know that paypal is very secure.
Of course, I am still getting the junk mail at the suspended/closed email address and I just keep forwarding it as spam/spoof/phishing, etc. And I always get a response that it was indeed just that: spam/spoof/phishing, junk, etc. And I will continue to report all of it, no matter which account it comes too.
Why? Because they want to know about it.
And, don't forget, so does yahoo, or any other email program you might use, like hotmail or msn.
I hope I didn't confuse you even more!!
