I have a 5 year old granson and a 2 year old grandson. I have spent very little time with them since coming down sick.
I would like to get them something each year or birthday that is a tradition type of thing or something they can add from the year before.
My dad always purchased See's Candy for us but has recently stopped.
Don't think I want to do the Seee's Candy thing.
Looking for ideas that others might have for family traditions.
Plant a tree or adopt a wildlife or a child?
But don't think they really know what that is all about.
I know that their material needs are being met.
And whatever i send to them will be taken care of.
I like nature and would like to incorporate that into the gift if possible.
An annual subcription perhaps. I did the wildlife magazines. One child liked it the other did not.
He is more interested in how things come apart and how to put them back together.
Thinking of figureing out how my camera works and trying to take pics of some of the routine things Rosie and I do and then put a book together with words at their reading level with the pictures on the pages.
I have wanted to do this from day one but was not well enough I think I just might be able to do this now and just might fit in the budget too and help me connect with them.
haven't tried taking pictures again since coming down sick but hoping to very soon.
Just yammering..saw one site that suggested buying stocks. Certificates are made up for kids and have pictures on them from their favorite toy company or ice cream company, et.
But, at their age I don't think it would mean much to them and I have no idea how much it cost to purchase a piece of stock with mickey on it or that train guy, etc.

I loved your idea of the picture book of you and Rosie.
I have a newly adopted "granddaughter"(now 3 months) as part of my extended family, lets say.
I had the same feeling you did about creating a tradition-but I took the easy route and bought her a music box. So each year I will give her a music box.
Your ideas are much more thoughtful and personal.
My problem these days is that my thinking is much more ambitious than my abilities-consequently I am always at risk for letting someone down or not being able to follow through on good intentions.
Wish I had more bright ideas to offer you- The fact is- I am hoping I will live long enough for this child to grow to adulthood, but I don't think I will.
So I may start my own picture journal of pictures of me and her-just so she can remember how much I love her.

I do craft things, so each Christmas I make each one of my grandchildren a Christmas ornament with their picture in it. Some years, the craft is complex, other times - simple. I always put a cute picture of them, hoping that they will save them for their own tree one day.
I'm glad you posted the idea, because now I feel awful that I forgot this year.
Great nana, huh?
Well, they're young. They didn't miss it.

Books-or some simple outlier that might invoke ideas or creativity. They already have more than enough "stuff".
I talk to the local librarians and go on line in pursuit of ideas.
Happy New Year

Well, the picture thing is not realistic. I have not been able to take pictures since I came down sick with this in Oct. 2001.
I keep hoping that skill will come back.
I did oder some coloring books from Dover Publications for grandkids today.
That just might work. It is something that has a lot of flexibility money wise.
I myself have not even seen a dover publication but I hear they are good.
I just went to the teacher section and ordered under their grade or age level.
So, it still gives me a little of the old teacher fun and I hope will help them.
Lots of topics to choose from so hopefully I will find stuff they like.
No wrapping on my part or mailing so it is lyme friendly too at this point.
I just sent them a box of my picture books when I moved to the new apartment I had for preschool and K-3 supplies.
I figured someone needed to use them and I did not know when I would be using them in the classroom again.
