What's your favorite laundry detergent?

I like Tide but it is expensive. I've tried All but it made my white clothes look dingy and my colored clothes faded more than usual.

Do you have any cost saving, good laundry secrets?

I don't, except that sometimes it's the washing machine itself or the water quality, not the detergent.

I use natural brands because the smell of artificial chemicals and scents drives me nuts. Vitacost.com is a good place to buy the natural brands.

This is a "fake bleach" that claims to get whites and colors their brightest.

http://www.vitacost.com/Seventh-Generation-Chlorine-Free-Bleach-Free-Clear

I read that stuff works via hydrogen peroxide though, so you could just try this tip: (hydrogen peroxide is pretty cheap)

"Whiten Your White Laundry
Pour in a cup of hydrogen peroxide into a washer load of white laundry instead of chlorine bleach and it will whiten your clothes. Don't pour it directly on your clothes. It can fade out the color just like bleach does!"

Thanks Hoosiers [Smile]

I agree, part of the problem is that my washing machine is old and has started to kinda beat up my clothes. I have to use the gentle cycle for everything and even then it spins my clothes into tight ropes.

I never thought to try to add hydrogen peroxide to a whole load of laundry. I have used it successfully to prevent/remove stains from my scrubs before. And I'm happy to report that it didn't ruin my favorite brightly colored top. I was quite worried about that.

I use liquid Gain. Sometimes I wash in Murphy

oil soap if I have staines to get out. Its pure vegetable soap. and contains 98% naturally derived ingredients.

Ecover. BioKleen. Seventh Generation. Planet.

All are safe for the environment - your local water ways - and also don't leave chemical or perfumed residue.

All of those listed above use coconut and/or citrus as the base.

No petroleum products or sulfates are used. Anything containing petroleum products or synthetic perfumes are endocrine disruptors and damage our body's ability to product the right hormones in the right amount.

If on clothing, that is absorbed through our skin and changes our hormone production.

A bit more about that here:

What about fabric softener? Are there non chemical alternatives? I like the idea of less chemicals but I would also like my laundry to smell good (rather than fragrance free).

Good topic. Can't recall what I purchased last...guessing it was 7th generation.

But, wanted to try another brand out next.

Used Tide before I became aware of how important it is to use non toxic detergent as we pick it up in our clothes, our sheets, etc.

I have used Dreft for the last 15 years. I worked in a lot of greasy chemicals and it was the only thing I found that I could soak my clothes in overnite and get the stains out.

It is also great for baby formula etc. Kept a tub of full strength for daughters clothes everyday to soak and next am throw the tub in washer with

enough else for a full load and they never had stains or fading. It costs a little more but I got more out of our clothes.

Charlies Soap

80 wash loads, comes in a 100% cotton bag, certified non toxic, hypo-allergenic,and biodegradable. contains natural washing soda, sodium silicate, and coconut oil. one tablespoon/load. In NC can find at gas stations, and health food stores, for $10. Not as good as Tide, but it works ok.
