- As long as you are not using headphones, also no in-the-ear pods, and you listen only at a reasonable volume, there is no problem. If your ears ring at all afterward, it was too loud.
I must say that your headline is of concern, admitting that you know you're killing your ears. So, I assume you are feeling an assault of noise ?
Why kill any part of your body? Our ears help us with so much besides hearing. So much. Be kind to yourself, to your body.
Listen safely.
I'm hooked on www.FolkAlley.com - and it does not hurt my ears at all but nourishes my life in many ways. Music is good. -

I do use headphones. *runs and hides in a closet*
I do keep it turned down low, and don't have the earbuds inside of my ears.
I know I did damage to my ears when I was younger, and used to listen to the music turned up LOUD.
I enjoy the music so much, it kinda "takes me away"..when I get the chance to listen to it. I understand totally about the nourishing of your life.
It's when I'm feeling that assault of noise that the use of headphones allows me to "check out" for a bit. Blocks whatever madness might be going on in the house (think 2 pre-pubescent boys bouncing off the walls).
I'm trying to keep it to a minimum, however...

Thank you Keebler...I take about 1,000mgs of magnesium a day. I'm thinking that it actually makes me tired? I'm switching now to taking it at night, to see if that helps.
I haven't added the fish oil yet, and that's coming...I've already purchased it, I just haven't actually started swallowing. SO many supps to take!!

All I can say is we each get one set of ears. Once there is damage, it often is forever. Those tiny hair cells usually don't regenerate. When there is a rupture between the sacs and the fluids mix, there is no sorting it out.
Our ears are an engineering marvel, when they are working right.
When they don't, it's miserable.
Treat your ears like they are a treasure, guard them from all noise even good sounds like music. Keep the volume down and save your hearing.
I see you mention the sound of being under water. I wonder if you are experiencing "fullness" and the sounds you are hearing are normal day to day sounds but are muffled?
Are you always aware of the under water feeling or do you have periods when your ears "open up" and you can hear things more clearly and don't have that stuffed up feeling?
How is your nose, is that stuffy or drippy, too? Do you notice a seasonal pattern or do your ears bother you all the time?
Sodium can be a problem because it can cause pressure inside the ear structure from fluid build up. Reducing sodium in your diet can positively affect this feeling but it's not easy.
That would mean you need to alter your diet to mostly freshly prepared food, nothing out of a box or can and minimal eating out at restaurants.
Become aware of some trigger additives, like artificial sweeteners or MSG-type preservatives. Not an easy task but much better for your body and your health.
Decongestants don't address this internal fluid problem.
To find out whats really going on with your ears you would need a full workup which is a series of tests that also include a hearing test.
An ENT can do some, but from personal experience, a Neurotologist can perform all the tests, interpret the results and determine a treatment plan, if there is a need.
I also have a chronic back issue and cannot take anything except Tylenol for pain.
Magnesium can help with muscle spasms, I use Magnesium Malate or Glycinate, 800 to 1200mg per day, per a holistic MD I have seen for years.
As a side benefit from years of supplementing Magnesium, my bone density is amazing.
Probably the best thing I have done for my back is having therapy for my neck.
I found a trainer who has helped me with reconditioning and strength training. Since I started this, I can go days without taking any Tylenol or a muscle relaxer. I also started LDN (low dose naltrexone).
This combination of LDN, therapy, exercise, better sleep has made such a difference in pain levels. If it hadn't happened to me, I would wonder if it were possible at all.
You can use a Swiss Ball and some hand weights at home to stretch and strengthen your back. I picked up a book at B & N recently for 7.00 with all sorts of exercises using the ball.
Seriously, be careful with your ears. It's no fun at all living with constant tinnitus or the other symptoms of inner ear disease.

ANY assault will damage the ears. And that can damage your ability to walk, talk, read, write, talk and comprehend. Seriously. If you do wear headphones, keep the music to a low level.
If you find that "assault" is somehow therapeutic, go out and throw a ball or do something safer to move energy, anger, frustration, etc..
If you are cranking up the volume to block out other noise, that can destroy your future in so many ways. It the environment is that loud, it could be hurting your kids' ears, too.
You can declare a quiet time, etc. But turning UP the volume is going to damage your ears, especially when on antibiotics.
When I was a kid, if we got too loud, we were told to pipe down so my folks could "hear themselves think." I didn't understand what that meant then but we all understood to take our noise elsewhere or to be quiet. You deserve that much, too.
I've not been able to go out socially for 2 years now. I rarely can even tolerate a visitor. My ears are just toast. I've not been able to drive since '93. Can't even take a walk around my apt. complex due to noise from passing cars, etc.
Taking a shower is excruciating, with or without ear plugs - as is washing vegetables, preparing or cleaning up for meals - as the water is torturously loud, vibrating through all my bones.
PLEASE protect your ears because they are also the guiding force for your body. You have no idea all the ways ear damage can destroy your life.
Just 90 seconds above 85 decibels can cause permanent damage. A hairdryer is 100 decibels. "Assaultive" music through headphones, so close to the ear nerve - is exponentially louder.
My ear damage is not at all from noise (other than a couple loud concerts decades ago when I was shocked at how loud even Heart was - or their warm-up band). That kind of damage can cause problem years later.
Ear damage can destroy lives. Don't let that happen. You could be having to eat all meals - even at Christmas - all by yourself because hearing damage can go a couple different ways.
Some sounds can be just too much to bear. A click of a spoon on a plate can toss me to the floor both from the ear pain and the seizure trigger. To some degree, that might be avoided.
Please take care of your ears. Assaultive music through headphones is like standing in front of a speeding bus. And that can lead to a life of pain and loneliness of unimaginable proportions.

Posting from phone. Sorry. Bedridden. My own fault though. Completely my fault. I knew better. Thank you all. Im sufficiently frightened to never put those earbuds in again. Funny but i never have music up loud when just using the stereo. Dont want to damage my sons hearing. It was just my little slice of escape. No more. Made a believer out of me. Thank you all!

Ok maybe i did type that. I was in a TREMENDOUS amount of pain monday. All from sitting too much. I had to post using my phone instead of the computer. Yeesh..i was in a bad spot. I sounded ridiculous.
