My puter constantly times me out. I am on a slow dial up,,,always happens when dont want it to. It clicks like crazy,,then pops up the connection box. IF I am typing when that happens it types over the name box and it wont ever reconnect. AND you can erase that and fix it 20 times before it quits resetting that back to where it was. NOw if all this isnt bad enough, after the connection box even when you catch it right comes a box says redial, connection failed,,,so you click that,,,(doesnt really fail) anyway another box comes up says cant redial cause the line is already busy and dialed,,,so you have to click out of that,,,wait a bunch of time,,,it clicks 10000 times then it 'might' restart again.

I once got mad at it and reset the time out in one spot to never time out. Now IF you dont change pages and just read on one site,it times out anyway. Sometimes it stays on all night and doesnt time out, next time it might time out once or twice an hour. Always when chatting on Saturday nites,,,then you have to completely reboot from 0 to get on again.

THIS darn slow dial up,,,,is that the problem?? Like when I am looking at e-bay items it takes forever to switch from one item description to another,,,it scrolls down a little then sticks,,,then after a LONG pause it blinks the page and it scrolls a bit more,,,then stops for another blink, then it works,,,by that time I am ready to start another item and you have to start all over with the blink and hold theory of reading. I would like to "BUST" that hourglass symbol who is always staring me in the face. Is there any fixes, more power, more memory, different settings?? GRRRRRRRR Videos and big pictures could take up to half hour to load. My dial up runs about 46-48K as a rule!! Country life isnt all THAT good,,,always!!!

Any advice or did I just blow the steam off the top???
Just now the auto disconnect bell chimed and I had to click or it would have timed me out again,,,and it JUST did it before I started all this,,,I realize I type slow,,but this is crazy!!!

Don,

Hope someone comes along who can help you. I do recall having this problem many moons ago.

I think the solution was the company did something on their end to help matters.

They needed to replace some equipment or increase what they had or something.

Sure hope this problem is resolved for you soon. How frustrating.

Don - What version of windows are you running (I'm assuming you run windows anyway)??

I might be able to help you figure it out.

With Internet Exporer closed, go to start > control panel > internet options > delete files > checkmark in "delete all offline content". Then start IE and see if pages load any faster, the first time you visit pages, they may take a while, but the next time you visit the site, they should load faster if the problem was corrupt temporary internet files. Deleting TIFs is always a good first troubleshooting step.

Also, hook up a phone to the line that you're using for your pc and see if there is static on the line, if so tell your phone company that there is static on the line and ask them to fix it (don't tell them it's for your internet connection or they probably won't do anything).

You might also try clearing the DNS cache:

Clear Windows DNS Cache

If none of the above helps, you might try a different browser to see if it has the same problem.

Firefox - Rediscover the Web

I would recommend disabling link prefetching as it may slow Firefox down on a dial up connection. After you have installed Firefox and rebooted, start Firefox, then type about:config into the location bar (address bar) and press enter, type prefetch into the filter near the top of the page, find this line:

network.prefetch-next

Right click this line and select toggle (to false), close and reopen Firefox.
